About the Author
E.R. Punshon was born in London in 1872.
At the age of fourteen he started life in an office. His employers soon informed him that he would never make a really satisfactory clerk, and he, agreeing, spent the next few years wandering about Canada and the United States, endeavouring without great success to earn a living in any occupation that offered. Returning home by way of working a passage on a cattle boat, he began to write. He contributed to many magazines and periodicals, wrote plays, and published nearly fifty novels, among which his detective stories proved the most popular and enduring.
He died in 1956.

Classic golden age mystery

I just finished this book this afternoon and have immediately started looking for another book by this fine author. I actually found the book extremely well written and intricately plotted, the characters believable and interesting, and the dialog and details interesting and believable. It is of its time (early in the 30's or perhaps even the late 20's) so the book follows a certain sort of pattern but I really enjoyed it and found it worth dozens if not hundreds of recently written (and poor in every way) self published or "popular" mysteries. It has a little map and is a fair play mystery so that the clues are "visible" to an astute reader along the way although some of them are obscured at first. I'm hoping to find some more of Punshon's titles at a reasonable price.

Historical fiction with different plot resolution

He is a good writer and I've read a few of his books. But, in all of them he develops the plot to an extent and then the solution to the puzzle is revealed in a dialogue or a letter or a summary in the mind of a main character... the revelation is often difficult to follow, and in this book, it was a little disappointing. Rather than action of the characters resolving the puzzle, there are words to put the thing together. Not as effective, in my view. However, I keep in mind when reading historical fiction that those were different times, before the advent of television, so readers were more accustomed to this kind of development. I do recommend R. R. Punshon's books, though, for their historical value and for the author's keen ability to develop intriguing characters, interesting settings and good ideas for his plots.

Okay Classic Mystery

Policeman Bobby Owen is asked to go undercover to help guard a man afraid someone is after him after his twin brother dies. Bobby goes to live in the house with the man, his secretary, his nephews and his servants. It takes some doing to figure out if murder took place, what's really going on then solving the next murder that occurs.
Okay Classic Mystery. Moved a bit slow in places, but complicated enough, I guess. Not as good as some other classic mysteries.
