Hilarious, Raw and Relevant

Ashes of Light is a fantastic read! I am a Professor of Theater and have taught and directed for many years. It always touches and amazes me when a playwright can so vididly capture a specific culture and yet still make the story universal. Julio Cesar returns home to find the place where he grew up smaller than he remembered (in more ways than one) and the claustrophia is only rivaled by the weight of his loss. His dad left him without his name and without a clear understanding of where he came from. Even though his mother, Luz, struggles to understand his life so far away from home, she herself has detached herself from her own family in the Dominican Republic. It's that horrible moment when you realize that what you've been running from your whole life, you've now become....your mother! So raw and so real. So funny!

Hysterical and Poignant

I saw the original play performed in NYC and not only it made me LAUGH so hard I cried, but also made me feel so much for all the characters. I HAD to buy the book. It's an excellent play and a great read. I haven't seen the Dominican people in New York captured with this authenticity in a play before. There are themes throughout people can relate to. Above all family. I was glued to the pages just waiting for what each of the characters would say next. They're all so funny and so deep at the same time. Mr. Rodriguez is definitely a playwright to watch and I was glad to see the play won all those awards, because it so deserved them. I also just heard he won the Nuestras Voces competition at Repertorio Español in New York with his new play. I'm VERY excited to see it. I DEFINITELY recommend Ashes of Light.

Saw the play and was automatically transported back to the front of the stage at the Teatro La Tea. Brilliant precise translation of this play. Enjoyed it on stage and on my kindle.

John Harvey is a Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Iowa. He received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Missouri–Columbia, USA. Mediocre Follett is still better than a lot of writing

This book is dated, and the plot took a while to sink in for me. However, once I got into the swing of things, I enjoyed this book very much.
Because the amount of artwork by any given artist is finite, discovering that there may be an undiscovered work by a famous artist is a huge discovery in the art world. When an art student studying abroad hears that not all of Modigliani's works are available, she delightedly decides to find the one that was reputedly hidden during the War.
The many twists of the plot are difficult to follow until they tie together at the end of the book. The plots do fit nicely! but it is confusing to follow throughout the body of the book.
This is not Ken Follett's best work. However, for an early work, it's quite good; furthermore, it's a lot better than a lot of the drek that some authors are trying to pass off as literature.

I found this book outside a small bookshop while i was strolling the streets of Amsterdam. I was on my summer holidays from Ireland and was quite lost. Being an avid Follet reader i snatched it up immediately.
Lets call a spade a spade. The book lacks depth, character development or any sign of tension. However, it was an entertaining read for a person who was travelling by train around Europe and was often stuck for english material. by Follets own admission the book didn't turn out the way he had planned. nobody would try to argue that this book is anywhere as good as 'pillars' but at the end of the day it is still a good entertaining read.

An early Follett novel only most ardent fans will moderately enjoy

There's not much to say in reviewing the Modigliani Scandal, an early Follett novel published before he hit it big with the World War II thriller "Eye of the Needle." In a forward for the version I read, Follett acknowledges that this little story about art dealers, artists and thieves in London doesn't have much depth. Still, it is fun to read and to see traces of the greatness that is to come. There really aren't any main characters, just a bunch of story lines that all merge together in the end. The plot concerns the chase for a rare painting by a famous Italian artist, Modigliani. The plot also follows a Lucian Black as he tries to open his own art gallery. The book is short and easy to read, and if you're a Follett fan, I recommend you read this, but I don't think I'd recommend that you pay money for it. It's just not that good of a book.

Optimistic look at health care reform

Thoughtful well researched book describes the problems facing healthcare finance. Financing health care after all is the problem, finding ways to make US health care work for patients rather than insurance companies is where it is at.
Rather than the usual doom and gloom you expect when reading about health care reform this book left me feeling like the American people ally could do it, we could really fix our health care system with out throwing the proverbial baby out with the bath water. As a health care worker I felt energized after reading this book rather than like I was waiting for the next disaster Good quick read.
