A Good Buy

As a piano teacher I am elated to find this book for sale as it was unavailable for a while. This is my favorite Christmas book as it has good arrangements of both sacred and secular favorites. The only skimpy arrangement is the one of the "Hallejuah Chorus." My students love "The Carol of the Bells." The popular music carols all have good jazz chords. I highly recommend this book!

It is such a joy to listen to my daughter play out of this book. We can even sing along with her while she plays. I am thankful for these simple yet challenging arrangements.

I'm really enjoying this intermediate book. They have nice arrangements which are different from my other Christmas books.. Sadly, I find them challenging (which is good, but dang I wish I could play effortlessly!). I would recommend this book. Practice! Practice! Practice!

About the Author

Bill Bolton is an international consultant in enterprise development and entrepreneurship. He has held a personal UNITWIN (UNESCO) Chair in Innovation and Technology Transfer. He was the Founding Director of the St John’s Innovation Centre in Cambridge and taught engineering at Cambridge University. Bill spent half his career in business and industry and half in academia. His other publications include: The University Handbook on Enterprise Development (1997) and jointly with John Thompson, The Entrepreneurs in Focus: Achieve Your Potential (2003).

John Thompson is Emeritus Professor of Entrepreneurship at the University of Huddersfield, UK and, part-time, Professor of Social Entrepreneurship at Anglia Ruskin University, UK. He has also held visiting appointments in Australia, Finland and New Zealand. John has published a number of titles, including the seventh edition of his textbook Strategic Management: Awareness and Change which is soon to be published and he has written a number of journal articles, especially on social entrepreneurship

Both Bill and John have been involved in business start-ups in many countries over a number of years and they have interviewed a diverse range of entrepreneurs.

I have used the previous two versions of this book to inform my course design for teaching and coaching entrepreneurs since 2001. The strengths-based approach is uniquely introduced and pioneered in this book. Understanding the strengths approach is vital for understanding how to blend and develop successful entrepreneurs and their teams. The diverse case studies of legendary, cultural, and 'dark-side' entrepreneurs are a great place to begin dipping into this book.

Mostly fluff

There are a couple of cool charts and useful things here. But much of the book is super short bios about entrepreneurs with only the pretense of structure. The bios themselves are strange. They appear to be taken from a children's encyclopedia except that they are full of typos. The Wright Brothers were in North Carolina not South Carolina.

Excellent book for the piano repertoire!

Master piece music book! The arrangements were made by Joe Hisaishi himself.
If you really want to perform this songs as they were written, you will have to study them as
seriously as if you were studying Bach, Mozart, Beethoven or any other serious composer.
The quality of the paper is great, although, the book is paperback.

Best Ghibli Piano Book

This book contains, by far, my favorite arrangements of pieces from Studio Ghibli films. The arrangements, written by Joe Hisaishi himeself, are rich and well written for the piano. The scores are beautiful and the binding is very nice. Many of the most popular pieces are included. If you're looking for Ghibli piano arrangements, this is the book.

The planning of al-Kufah is set forth in considerable detail, as is the building of its main features--the citadel and the great congregational mosque.

After this interlude there follow accounts of the conquests of a string of towns in northern Mesopotamia, which bring the Muslim fighters near the border with al-Jazirah. That region is conquered in 17/638. The history of its conquest is preceded by an account of the Byzantines' siege of the city of Hims. Also in this year, 'Umar is recorded to have made a journey to Syria, from which he is driven back by a sudden outbreak of the plague, the so-called Plague of 'Amawas.

The scene then shifts back to southwestern Iran, where a number of cities are taken one after another. The Persian general al-Hurmuzan is captured and sent to Medina. After this, the conquest of Egypt--said to have taken place in 20/641--is recorded.

The volume concludes with a lengthy account of the crucial battle at Nihawand of 21/642. Here the Persians receive a blow that breaks their resistance definitively.

This volume abounds in sometimes very amusing anecdotes of man-to-man battles, acts of heroism, and bizarre, at times even miraculous events. The narrative style is fast-moving, and the recurrence of similar motifs in the historical expose lends them authenticity. Many of the stories in this volume may have begun as yarns spun around campfires. It is not difficult to visualize an early Islamic storyteller regaling his audience with accounts that ultimately found their way to the file on conquest history collected by Sayf b. 'Umar, al-Tabari's main authority for this volume.

The unedited, complete version of The Art of Travel

A great book, full of practical advice for travel in the rough areas of the world.

Some of the advice is decidedly not politically correct. The author, Francis Galton, reflects the attitudes of British white males of the 1850's towards non-white people. As a historical record, these parts make interesting reading. Simply reading something now-thought offensive does not make the modern reader offensive.

The majority of the book, though, contains politically-neutral advice of value to today's travelers, especially if they are going to camp out in the bush.

Insightful look into the future, with well-founded, reasoned optimism

Think back over the past few years and think about the books you've read on the current state of the world and/or its fast-approaching fate. Then, when you get back from the pharmacy and take your copious amounts of anti-depressants needed to cope with those books, pick up a copy of An Optimist's Tour of the Future: One Curious Man Sets Out to Answer "What's Next?" and throw out the pills. Amid all the doom and gloom, here's a blossom of hope. Mind you, Mr. Stevenson is no naïf in rose-colored glasses: he approaches his subjects - among them some of the world's most brilliant people - with an intelligent skepticism, challenges their assumptions and never lets them off the hook when they try to wiggle around the tough questions.

To get a sense of Stevenson's style and approach in this book, think about the motivations behind What Are You Optimistic About?: Today's Leading Thinkers on Why Things Are Good and Getting Better, combine it with the probing intelligence and never-say-die quest for creative answers behind Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything (P.S.), then dash in the wit and wisdom of a A Short History of Nearly Everything.

Each section of Stevenson's book covers a specific topic, with subjects ranging from transhumanism to robotics to the environment to genetic engineering (to name but a few). But more interesting still are the people working at the cutting edge of these fields. In each section, we follow Mr. Stevenson around the world as he visits some of these leading minds of our time, visionaries like Ray Kurzweil, George Church and Vint Cerf. Through wit, charm and intelligence, he elicits a level of frankness that you will not witness in any other interview format. (In that sense, the book is worth the price for the biographical components alone.)

I think the biggest selling point of this book, though, is the way it alters the reader's whole way of looking at an exciting future that is so much closer than most of us might think. Stevenson calls it a 'reboot', and that's a very apt descriptor: the reader finishes the book with a sense of awe (and yes, some trepidation) about a future in which everything we have taken for granted for so long, is suddenly washed away in favor of very new definitions of things as fundamental as success, happiness, relationships, even mortality.

So put down the doom and gloom for a while, turn off the 24/7 parade of dismay and pick up this reason to be optimistic. The future is going to be a wild ride, and Stevenson's book is a good road map.

Informative, easy to read and fun!

I really enjoyed this book!! It is very readable and offers a very informative look at some of the most important future technologies. It's based on the author's travels and interviews with the top people in the various fields. I find it interesting and surprising that a professional comedian would write such an insightful book on these subjects.

The book looks at genetics/biotech engineering, robotics and artificial intelligence, transhumanism (merging people and machines), nanotechnology, the commercial space program and technology to battle climate change. The last part of the book focuses on how all this might affect people, society and culture. As the title suggests the book has a generally optimistic take on these technologies, but it does offer some balance, and the author keeps up his sense of humor (British humor) even when writing about existential treats from things like engineered viruses or nanotechnology grey goo.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get an idea of what might be coming in the next few decades. If you really want to delve into the technology and especially transhumanism there is also Ray Kurzweil's (who was interviewed in this book) classic, The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology (but that is a much more challenging and technical read that this book).

A peak at tomorrow today!

What will the future bring?

Science writer Mark Stevenson answers this question in four sections dealing with research related to:

1) Extending the human life span;

2) Creating more human machines;

3) Protecting Mother Earth; and

4) The author's specualtions on where all these developments will leave us.

In some cases, the "optimist" in this book's title is merely given lip service. In other cases, "optimist" means giving credence to some research possibilities that may take a long time to yield any fruit (if, honestly ever).

By way of another general point, this book has no photo section which is kind of too bad for many of the interesting gadgets and people he discusses.

But, to the topics:

EXTENDING THE HUMAN LIFE SPAN

This section consists of three chapters discussing the human genome project and research on artificially extending human life.

Perhaps most promising in this area was research by the Harvard School of Medicine which developed a protocol not only for halting aging actually reversing its signs in lab rats.

Here's how they did it. At the tail end of every string of DNA in your body are what is called telomeres. They function sort of like the plastic thing at the end of shoelaces by keeping the code clear of being frayed and damaged. But shoe laces, DNA code does tend to degrade over time. What the Harvard researchers did was to create a substance called telomerase which artificially replaces lost telomeres to extend DNA life span. It allows the DNA to replace itself more times and amazingly actually reverse the aging process.

But the Harvard researchers are not alone. In this book we also meet life extension researcher Aubrey de Grey. de Grey thinks aging is like a disease and he's focused in on seven areas that, if conquered, would actually conquer death itself.

Though this book provides a serviceable treatment of these issues, those wishing a more complete understanding of them are probably best referred to Long for this World which spends a book discussing these issues instead of just a few chapters.

CREATING HUMAN MACHINES

This is one of the two biggest sections in the book.

Wisely it eschews the long discussion of the history of artificial intelligence, focusing only on the emerging developments on its frontiers.

For my money, the most interesting development here is a little robot called Cog developed by Cynthia Breazeal. Going on the idea that humanity is skin deep, Cog is form fitted to be very user friendly. It's animated face moves and watches and interacts with the user.

For his part, AI founding father Marvin Minsky has scoffed at Cog saying that though Cog may seem sentient, it isn't really sentient (whatever that means). Breazeal's riposte that we can't know the answers to such questions about anything I think is quite on point.

Other research discussed involves problem solving robots and though they may have conquered a harder robot engineering problem, their result somehow doesn't seem as exciting as that of Breazeal's.

True to any book discussing human machines, this one of course involves input from Ray Kurzweil. And that's fine and good.

But as with the extending life span discussion, Kurzweil is another great example of a guy with things to say that deserve their own book. And since Kurzweil has written two of them, readers with an interest in these issues would probably be well advised to read either or both of them.

For his part, Kurzweil seems to believe that machines will achieve human like (and better) intelligence by brute force. Noting that processing power has been doubling on the order of once every two years or so, Kurzweil predicts that computers will be smarter than a human by 2020 and smarter than all humans by 2050.

Under Aubrey de Grey, Kurzweil believes his immortality won't come from telomere research and its like but rather his litteral fusion with an intelligent machine.

PROTECTING MOTHER EARTH

Along with the previous section this is one of the two biggest sections in Stevenson's book.

In it, he discusses the threat of global warming and also the threat of diminishing Earth resources.

Though he half heartedly acknowledges the wealth of scientific information that says "yes, we DO have a global warming problem" Stevenson is perhaps at his most optimist in this book by suggesting that our man made global warming problem does have man made solutions.

Most interesting of these is a process he discusses whereby excess CO2 can actually be sucked back out of the air. Though this research is in its tenative stages and could really use additional funding, this was the first time I actually felt the best about solving our global warming problem.

In terms of marshaling Earth resources, he discussed the creation of bacteria which could excrete their own gasoline and harvesting solar power...both of which are not even past their tentative stages.

WHAT IT ALL MEANS

For Stevenson, optimist that he is, all this amounts to a world like the one we have right now, but better where we live longer and are nicer to our planet.

In that sense his concluding chapters are little like a Hallmark card and a little like a long prayer.

So viewed they're fine, except when the cold reality of just emergent these researches all are.

In other words, the future may be great but it would also seem it's a long way off too.

The future of middle school?

Juan is an eighth grader in a near-future San Diego. Final exams have arrived and Juan and his friends are under a lot of pressure to perform well because those who don't keep up in this fast-moving information-driven virtual-reality society are left behind. That's what happened to Juan's father. Juan is determined to succeed, so much so that he's experimenting with cognition-enhancing drugs.

For one of their exams, students must work with a partner on a project of their choosing without outside assistance. That means that Juan and his partner Miriam can't access any information or help that's not already been downloaded into their wearable computers and networked brains. If they're caught communicating with anyone from outside, even remote students, they'll fail. While Juan and Miriam are working on their project in the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, they come across a new species of intelligent mice acting strangely in the park. If they want to get their own theory out there before someone else makes the discovery, they have to integrate a lot of sketchy facts very quickly and make some wild guesses about what's going on in Torrey Pines. They also have to worry about a remote virtual student who may be trying to steal their project.

Vernor Vinge presents a possible future that's not too hard to believe in. In order to just keep up with their peers, kids are required to be hooked into a global network were they can access and assimilate huge amounts of information in a very short time. Those who can't handle the new technology and who can't absorb a lot of data rapidly will end up on the bottom rungs of society. Parents and grandparents who haven't learned to use the new technology or to adapt to a barrage of new knowledge are quickly becoming obsolete. Juan feels so much pressure that he's willing to cheat by using drugs.

Fast Times at Fairmont High is supposed to be scary -- and a warning, I think -- but as a college professor and the mother of an unmotivated eighth grader, the thought that kids would be so driven to learn and excel sort of excited me. In reality I think that even if (or when) we have these technologies in the future, most eighth graders will still be more interested in playing games and socializing with friends than worrying about their future socioeconomic status. I can't see Vinge's future actually coming to pass, but it's fascinating to think about and I wouldn't be surprised if kids are someday, in the not too distant future, using the cool technology that Vinge describes.

Fast Times at Fairmont High is set in the same world as Vernor Vinge's novel Rainbow's End which is on my TBR stack. Fast Times at Fairmont High won the 2002 Hugo Award for Best Novella. I listened to Brilliance Audio's version which is just under three hours long and is nicely narrated by Eric Michael Summerer.

If you had read Rainbows End, you were immediately familiar with the characters. But alas, the names are the same, but the characters are different. Regardless, this is a great story, and worth your time.

Starhawk and Hilary Valentine, renowned leaders in the Wicca movement, use the transformative fairy tale of The Twelve Wild Swans to teach an advanced class on magic. More significantly, this is an introduction to a mature level of Wicca called "reclaiming," a model of witchcraft that blends magic, personal growth, and activism. The book begins with the first chapter of the fairy tale, in which a foolish queen wishes to exchange her 12 sons for a daughter. An old woman "dressed all in black" overhears the queen and makes the wish come true, granting the queen a daughter but turning her sons into wild swans.

From here the coauthors launch into a back-and-forth structure of telling the story and then stopping to show how it applies to a witch's initiation and transformation. For example, we all must leave the castle in order to heal our past. We all must spend some time wandering in the wilderness before finding our true home, and we all must conquer some form of "wicked vows" before we can reach full maturity. Starhawk (The Spiral Dance; Truth or Dare, etc.), founder of a new spirituality effort called the Reclaiming Movement, teams up with co-religionist Hilary Valentine for this training and instruction book in magical methods. Their spirituality embraces several popular modern categories, including Wicca, paganism and the goddess movement. The term reclaiming refers to the goddess movement's Eden story, which posits a prehistorical time when matriarchal societies lived in harmony with one another and nature through worship of a female earth goddess, a pristine state that was ended by the rise of patriarchal religions focused on a male sky god. The authors are reclaiming the goddess traditions they believe existed in that ancient paradise, and their book offers others the chance to join in. To suit the needs of their presentation, they have adapted an ancient fairy tale about brothers turned into swans, whose sister wove magic shirts to turn them back into men. The book combines storytelling, instructions for performing magic rituals and advice on how to use these rituals as a form of therapy. The authors adapt popular psychology for an occult audience by translating psycho-jargon into witchcraft terminology. Readers who embrace goddess theology may well find this work instructive, though its advanced magical training will be a bit daunting for beginners. (Oct.)

The Spiral Dance (1979) is probably the best-selling book on contemporary witchcraft. Starhawk has published widely since that pivotal work, but none of her books have had the enormous impact of her first. The Twelve Wild Swans , however, just may replicate the success of Spiral Dance , for it offers a how-to as well as a why-to for aspiring witches. Based on the work of the Reclaiming Tradition, the ecospiritual witchcraft in which Starhawk has been a formative force, the book extrapolates its spiritual training from the European myth named by its title. In that story, the brothers of a princess are magically transformed into swans. She labors in pain and silence to free them, managing to do so just before she would have been killed. Thus, she saves both herself and them. In the tale, Starhawk and Valentine locate the stages of an initiatory journey, which they illustrate with group and individual rituals. In addition, vignettes of self-transformation and social transformation that result from such magical work not only further illustrate but expand the meaning of the text. Engaging and profound, this book well may become a classic of contemporary spiritual literature. Patricia Monaghan

Another gem from the Reclaiming Community

All too often, books on the Craft seem superficial. One is left with the feeling that there is a deeper mystery that is not being explained, a richer, darker, more passionate way to approach the Old Religion. The works of Starhawk and the Reclaiming Community stand apart from this depressing state of affairs. Each one unearths deep emotion and is filled with insight. This is the real thing, and that reality is felt bone deep.
"Twelve Wild Swans" is no exception. The lessons are based on an old, somewhat unsettling fairy tale. This story is approached from three different directions that enhance eachother. The most important thing, in my opinion, is the stress the authors both put on the seriousness of commiting one's self to the Craft. Witchcraft is a life altering journey, and that journey should not be embarked upon as a fashion statement. The Outer Path sections make this especially clear.
As a book that stresses dedication and a deep commitment to the Goddess, "Twelve Wild Swans" takes its place as a classic on par with, if not exceeding, "Spiral Dance". Thank you Starhawk and the Reclaiming Community!

If you're looking for a metaphysical interpretation of a fairy tale, go straight to Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Estes or Iron John by Robert Bly. Both will leave you with the feeling that you have been respected as a reader, that you have come closer to understanding yourself, and that a folk tale can contain great truths. On the other hand this book by Starhawk was, for me, almost impossible to read at all. Her witchier-than-thou attitude put together with her total self-righteousness, boring hateful feminism, and relentless telling and retelling and retelling of one thin little story is just awful. Sorry I can't agree with the other reviewers.
