A nice update to the original classic
By Tyler J. Alumbaugh
I read the first edition of "Guide to Numpy" in 2006, at the suggestion of Paul Dubois, whose role in the story of Numpy is described in this book. It was the description of the Numpy C-API in this book that both solved a real problem for me at the time and got me hooked on using Numpy for scientific computing.

This second edition is a worthy update, and should probably sit within reach for any serious Numpy user. Some parts of the book (e.g. chapters 5 and 6) are more like a reference, but other parts offer a nice tour of available techniques and libraries for how to solve a particular problem. For example, Ch 14 "Using Python as Glue" is a well rounded chapter on the myriad choices one has in interfacing Python with compiled code. Reading through the ufunc section is rewarding, and I also found the testing section quite enlightening - definitely worth a read if you are like me, and were pretty much just using "np.assert_array_almost_equal" all over the place.

The C-API section is as useful as ever, with some nice tips on how to navigate Python's C-API and survive reference counting (relatively) unscathed.

The last chapter, "Code Explanations" ends abruptly and could have gone into more depth. Nevertheless, it's a reasonable 'brain dump' of how a lot of Numpy code came together and why it looks the way it does.

Disclosure: This book got me so interested in using Python/Numpy for scientific/mathematical computing that I continued to work in that area for many years, culminating in me joining Continuum Analytics, the company co-founded by Travis Oliphant, which is where I'm currently employed. My thoughts here are my own.

Your guide to advanced NumPy
By Konrad Hinsen
This book is for scientists, engineers, and software developers who are familiar with basic NumPy usage and want to move on to the level of advanced users. It explains the design principles behind NumPy, such as the data types and memory layout of arrays and the all-important ufuncs, the "universal functions" which can be applied efficiently to arrays. It also explains how NumPy works at the C level, an important topic for those who write interfaces to C, C++, or Fortran libraries. Interfacing tools such as Cython, f2py, or SWIG are covered as well. Finally, there are lots of hints for doing computations efficiently based on a better understanding of how NumPy actually works.

I'd suggest readers to start reading chapters 1 to 3 in order. Then select from the following chapters by interest or need, and try to put the freshly learned material to some practical application before moving on to the next chapter. Don't try to read this book from cover to cover, as there is a serious risk of information overload.

This is the most in-depth book about NumPy I know of, written by the person who actually wrote most of the code. His profound understanding of NumPy shows through everywhere. Those looking for a beginner's level tutorial should look elsewhere, but for everyone else, this is the book you should have within reach from your keyboard.

Comprehensive reference for NumPy
By Naveen N Sinha
I write Python code on a daily basis and often use the Pandas data manipulation library. This book provided a useful insight into the underlying NumPy framework, especially in the first two chapters. The first chapter gave me an appreciation for how NumPy evolved over the past two decades and its relation to newer additions in the Python ecospace, like Jupyter. The second chapter gave a clear explanation of how NumPy is based on two fundamental objects: N-dimensional arrays and universal functions. The remainder of the book went into great detail about every aspect of the library, with tips and examples scattered throughout. This book will be a useful resource as I further explore the numerical capabilities of Python.

A Reed in the Wind: Joanna Plantagenet, Queen of Sicily, by Rachel Bard

"A Reed in the Wind " follows the eventful life of Joanna, daughter of Henry II of England and his queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine. Her first adventure took her to Sicily, where through an arranged marriage she became the queen of King William the Good. She fell in love not only with her husband but also with the sunny island over which they reigned. Despite evil plots of her vengeful mother-in-law, threats from scheming courtiers, and personal tragedy, through pluck and good sense Joanna withstood it all. More challenges were to come. After William's untimely death, Joanna was cast adrift in the turbulence of twelfth-century Europe. Her brother Richard the Lionheart, now king of England, rescued her and took her with him on Crusade to the Holy Land. Here she narrowly escaped marriage to an infidel, the brother of the Crusaders' dread enemy, Saladin. Back in France, still mourning William, she unexpectedly found contentment, if not passionate love, in a second marriage, to Count Raymond of Toulouse. Still ahead: the joy of motherhood, the comforts of friendship--and the agonies of intrigue and betrayal. Where would she find the strength to withstand the buffetings of fate and come at last to a safe haven?
"A Reed in the Wind" is the third in Rachel Bard's trilogy about Plantagenet queens. The heroine of the first, "Queen Without a Country," was Berengaria, wed to Richard the Lionheart. The second, "Isabella: Queen Without a Conscience," examines the beauteous, controversial Isabella of Angouleme, queen of King John, Joanna's younger brother. To research these three queens, the author traveled to Spain, France, England, Cyprus, Sicily--and so will you, as you follow their adventures on Kindle.

Not written with authenticity
By Historical Fiction Fan
There are many stories about Henry II and/or Eleanor of Aquitaine, as well as their sons Richard and John, but not about their daughters. I wanted to read this book because of the lesser known subject matter, but it was disappointing because of the writing. It just felt very artificial, and the characters were not written in a believable way most of the time. Words and speech patterns for the characters' dialogue is way too modern, and lacking any authenticity for the period. For example, none of the royals are addressed as anything but "Queen [First Name]" or "King [First Name]" by everyone who speaks to them, including servants - they don't use "Your Grace" etc. when someone speaks to a Queen or King in this story. Joanna's monk tutor/companion even addresses her by her first name only - I don't believe that would ever happen, regardless of whether he knew her from her youngest days or not. There are also some common grammatical errors that ought to have been corrected in editing. Use of "insure" when it ought to have been "ensure" and other really common errors are really not excusable in published works. There is a lot of historical info, but it often just seems to be recited, rather than woven into the story. Overall, the book was just so-so, in my opinion, because of the lower quality writing.

A fascinating read!
By Barbara J. Roush
Though I have read several books on the Plantagenet kings, this was my first book about Joanna. What an interesting woman! Eleanor certainly had some interesting children. An excellent read!

Really good historical fiction!
By Second Child
This is a genuinely dramatic historical novel. The author is skillful in narrating the ups and downs of Joanna"s life, making it difficult to Put the Book Down. Just as one problem is resolved, another comes along. Poor Joanna hardly had a minute to catch her breath between so many life-And-death situations. There is romance, warfare, royal banquets, births and deaths. This was not a dull period in history.

The characters are fully developed, well drawn. The narratives flow well and attention is given to landscape, clothing, interior decor, and the customs of the time. The author"s dialogue, which is her own creation and not historical fact, is believable. I fully enjoyed this book and will look for more by Rachel Bard.

Africa's Discovery of Europe, by David Northrup

This groundbreaking book examines the full range of African-European encounters from an African perspective rather than from the customary European one. By featuring vivid life stories of individual Africans and drawing upon their many recorded sentiments, author David Northrup presents African perspectives that persuasively challenge stereotypes about African-European relations as they unfolded in Africa, Europe, and the Atlantic world between 1450 and 1850.

Africa's Discovery of Europe features thematically organized chapters that explore first impressions, religion and politics, commerce and culture, imported goods and technology, the Middle Passage, and Africans in Europe. In addition, Northrup offers a thoughtful examination of Africans' relations--intellectual, commercial, cultural, and sexual--with Europeans, tracing how the patterns of behavior that emerged from these encounters shaped pre-colonial Africa. The book concludes with an examination of the roles of race, class, and culture in early modern times, pointing out which themes in Africa's continuing discovery of Europe after 1850 were similar to earlier patterns, and why other themes were different. Brief, inexpensive, and accessible, the third edition of Africa's Discovery of Europe offers an insightful look at the tumultuous and enduring relations between these two continents.

Review

"Africa's Discovery of Europe is one of the rare accounts of the era of the Atlantic Slave Trade that places African perceptions and interactions with Europe at the center of its analysis. The book deftly covers a wide variety of geographical locations and societies in order for us to gain a better understanding of how African elites and societies grappled with the economic, political and cultural transformations brought about as a result of the growth in Atlantic commerce."--Hilary Jones, University of Maryland, College Park

Both in conception and execution, this is a very original piece of work. The author combs an enormous amount of literature to forge coherent and refreshing new interpretations from eclectically existing facts.

Arthur Abraham, Virginia State University

"This book provides an important reinterpretation of the position of the African continent in global history, clearly introducing complex historical topics to the students of African and world history. The comparative approach to the study of Africa's influence in Europe illustrates the neglected theme that many history textbooks fail to highlight."--Ibrahim Hamza, Virginia Commonwealth University

"Northrup's writing is clear and engaging and students respond well to the insights into the many sophisticated aspects of African culture and society they may not be exposed to otherwise. The book does an excellent job demonstrating that Africans were not simple victims of slavery but took an active role in shaping their world."--Matthew Hassett, University of North Carolina Wilmington, Coastal Carolina University

"The book is chock full of the sort of information that students won't find in the standard survey texts. The snapshots of the lives of Africans are the most appealing and invaluable contributions the book makes. The fact that Africa's Discovery stresses the agency, rather than the victimization, of many Africans (including some of those enslaved) adds a much-needed level of complexity to the standard presentation of the era of the Atlantic Slave Trade."--Jonathan T. Reynolds, Northern Kentucky University

"Northrup's book is a well-written, accessible, and valuable overview of how Africans interacted with Europeans during the era of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Two characteristics that distinguish it from other books are its emphasis on African agency and its focus on African relations with Europe rather than with America. In focusing on mostly free Africans in Africa and Europe rather than enslaved Africans in America, Northrup counters the tendency-at least within the U.S.-to regard Africa primarily as an extension of the African-American experience rather than as a continent with its own unique history."--Stephen Volz, Kenyon College

He presents to us a beautiful and diverse culture
By Jon Busbee
The intent of this work by Northrup was not necessarily to add new knowledge to what we already knew about Africa, but to introduce entirely new ideas. Northrup's thesis is in essence to dispel the notion of African positivity in regards to European relations during the slave trade, and essentially taking ideas regarding the role of Africans in a new direction and telling a very vivid and personal counter narrative to Eurocentric history. In "Africa's discovery of Europe," Northrup provides not only a vivid counter narrative, but also a very effective and descriptive one. He presents to us a beautiful and diverse culture, as well as a side that was violent and unforgiving, as was the case in many places during these centuries. These perspectives leave a detailed impression on the reader. Undoubtedly, Northrup's book would cause any scholar to question their previous knowledge about Africa's existence and encounters with Europeans prior to the 19th century version of the slave trade. Given such an intense topic, he has an obligation to readers to produce more detailed knowledge about the encounters. The initial encounters Africans had with Europeans were exaggerated in description, these exaggerations were especially noticeable when Northrup describes African facial features. Northrup acknowledges that there were some downfalls related to the understanding of the sources. It is fair to make the assumption that an individual who didn't know much about Africa would be overwhelmed with the information in the text. Due to these slight issues, we give this book a 4 out of 5 review. - Jon, Amber, Renaldo, David

David Northrup, "Africa's Discovery of Europe." Boston: Oxford University Press. 2014. $32.53.
By Lauren Grant
In "Africa's Discovery of Europe," David Northrup engages primary sources to refute the metanarrative that Africa was unequivocally dominated by the Europeans. Northrup contends that prior to the European influence Africa was economically interdependent with rich political traditions. Intended for an academic audience, "Africa's Discovery of Europe" incorporates primary source narratives, travel ledgers, letters, and other historical media. This text is organized into six chapters, which spotlight primary sources relevant to the chapter's theme called "Voices." Although Northrup provides ample sources, explanatory footnotes that offer background information not readily available or known would improve the reading experience. Northrup's text centers around the assumption that readers feel sympathetic towards Africans' relations with Europeans during this period of discovery. The book's brevity does not undercut its academic content. Northrup successfully builds a foundation of the interactions of Africans and Europeans from points of view that are rarely depicted. Despite the abbreviated length of this history text, Northrup's incorporation and analysis of primary sources enrich the understanding of Africa from 1450-1850.

Great volume on pre-colonial African-European relations
By Matteo
I was very pleased, but not surprised, to see the publication of Africa's Discovery of Europe's third edition. This is a text I have been working with for years, first as a graduate student and then as a college teacher, and which I still enjoy flipping through from time to time, whenever I need inspiration for a new research project. Its principal merit is that of bringing to the attention of non-specialists the complexity of Africa's relation to Europe, taking the reader beyond the familiar narratives of the slave trade and European conquest. Northrup's narrative is one where European oppression and supremacy coexist side by side with African agency and independence. The volume's anecdotes remind us that the color line was often blurred and simplistic understandings of race should give way to a more nuanced understanding of otherness.
This volume can easily be enjoyed by readers of all levels with an interest in the history of Africa, its Diaspora and its complex interaction with Europe. This is the first and to this day only volume that makes a comprehensive history of African-European relations available to the general public. While in recent decades scholars have been paying growing attention to the history of African-European relations beyond the slave trade, prior to this volume's publication such histories remained confined to the often obscure and little engaging academic prose. It goes to the credit of this author, a seasoned academic, to be able to speak to a non-academic public.
Nevertheless, I particularly recommend this volume for any graduate and undergraduate course focused on the history of Africa and its diaspora, as well as comparative courses dealing with the history of migration and cross-cultural encounters. The volume lends itself to both cover-to-cover and selective reading as it covers four centuries of encounters between Africans and Europeans through an extensive collection of personal stories and anecdotes. As it addresses such disparate topics as the slave trade, religious conversion, and diplomacy, it can easily draw the attention of students with different interests. Furthermore, as each section comes with a generous list of primary and secondary references, this volume is also an ideal launching pad for a term paper.

From the Hilltop (Native Storiers: A Series of American Narratives), by Toni Jensen

For the characters we meet in Toni Jensen’s stories, the past is very much the present. Theirs are American Indian lives off the reservation, lives lived beyond the usual boundaries set for American Indian characters: migratory, often overlooked, yet carrying tradition with them into a future of difference and possibility. Drawing on American Indian oral traditions and her own Métis upbringing, Jensen tells stories that mix many lives and voices to offer fleeting perspectives on a world that reconfigures the tragedy and disconnection often found in narratives of American Indian life. A brother falls off the roof of an abandoned hotel, a young bride tries to connect with a family she’s never met, and an adopted teenage girl seeks acceptance where she is viewed as an outsider. The reader also encounters a kidnapped nephew, strangers in a hotel, and even a stray dog: these are the souls that populate Jensen’s stories, finding tentative connections with the past, the future, one another, and finally us.

From Publishers Weekly
The rich array of characters in Jensen's sobering collection are often Native Americans with one foot in an unforgiving white world and the other in the vanishing Native culture. The young protagonist of Butter, admiring the butter sculptures at the Minnesota State Fair, is a Blackfoot girl from the Blood Reserve in Alberta later adopted by a white couple. When a melee breaks out, she finds comforting words for the distressed Dairy Queen that obliterate the ideas each of them has about the other. At the Powwow Hotel is an extraordinary, mystical tale: corn has begun reappearing in ancestral cornfields, attracting a migration of Indians and allowing a recent widower and his son to find new purpose in running their West Texas hotel. The title story, chronicling an accident involving a group of drinking kids that leaves one with a life-threatening injury, offers, via a clever use of repetition, a regretful litany of complaints endured as the cost of assimilation into white culture. These stories are as much about tradition as they are about the now; Jensen's understated and powerful prose easily bridges that divide. (Mar.)

From Booklist
Jensen, of Métis descent, has written a dozen interconnected stories of uprooted Native Americans struggling to maintain their identities off reservation to create the latest in the University of Nebraska’s Native Storiers series. Most tales are set in a small West Texas town, while one is set in Minnesota, where an adopted Blackfoot girl, the only Indian in her county, hopes to become a state fair Dairy Princess. Elsewhere, a brother tries to get custody of his nephew, whose dad is an alcoholic. A librarian who has lost her third baby is brought out of her depression by a needy stray dog. A guilty brother deals with the incessant what-ifs after his younger brother falls from the roof of an abandoned hotel. A woman keeps vigil in her mother’s hospice room only to miss her final moments. These are seemingly universal glimpses into hardscrabble lives, but each is enriched with Jensen’s spot-on attention to the details of living as a minority on society’s fringes, struggling both to stay in touch with the past and survive in the present. --Deborah Donovan

Review
“Welcome to the West as seen by the folks who shop at K-Mart and work picking up tips and cleaning motels. This is a portrait of America told with truth and love, tales at once funny as they are tragic. Toni Jensen writes from her heart.”—Sandra Cisneros, author of Caramelo (Sandra Cisneros 2009-06-29)

“At first you’ll wish you had written these stories yourself, then you’ll suspect you feel that way because you maybe lived them, they’re that real, but by the end you’ll be thrilled just to have entered the world of Toni Jensen’s fiction. This is an important debut, one that stays with you. Expect more from her.”—Stephen Graham Jones, author of Bleed into Me (Stephen Graham Jones 2009-06-29)

"These stories are as much about tradition as they are about the now; Jensen's understated and powerful prose easily bridges that divide."—Publishers Weekly (Publishers Weekly 2010-01-11)

"The choice of words, whether for descriptions, dialogue, or inner reflection, is impeccable. Jensen is a powerful, gifted writer who has crafted characters for whom this reader felt deeply."—Lisa Rand, Feminist Review (Lisa Rand Feminist Review 2010-03-26)

"From the Hilltop is a fine debut, an example of the way that lightning can strike for a talented writer like Jensen, illuminating a portal to that place from which all good stories come. If readers are fortunate, that lightning will strike again."—Kurt Caswell, High Country News (Kurt Caswell High Country News 2010-10-25)

good book
By Rosey Byrd
Had to get this for a class and I am glad. It wasn't a book that I would have checked out of the library but it was super good.
This is not a cowboy book but you like western literature, you need to get and read this one.

A Good Effort
By Scáth
A good first effort from a good friend and former instructor. There's a lot of Louise Erdrich and Sherman Alexie here, two authors which, I will readily admit, I knew nothing of before I took a class with Toni.

Sponsor With Style
By Robert K Maddock
There are a number of books on personalities. I find this one better organized and more practical than others. Dr. Rohm's ability to simplify is most appreciated. His system of organizing the 4 basic personalities and orientations into "outgoing" and "reserved" with "task" and "people" orientation is simple to remember and easy to identify. His summary illustrations are excellent and assist the learning process. Although this book is written with the network marketing business in mind, it is applicable to all people.
As a physician, I have found that most college psychology and medical school psychiatry courses concentrate on the abnormal with little or no emphasis paid to the normal. After such courses we tend to think of the abnormal as nothing more than extreme extentions of the normal. Nothing could be further from the truth.
I recommend this book to all who wish to understand themselves and others better, achieve better relationships, and learn team building. We all have strengths and weaknesses. It is possible to learn to use our strengths in concert with others and turn our out-of-control weaknesses into strengths.
