Bill shows us the fur seals at St. Paul, the wolf in the John River Valley whose howl will haunt his memories and dreams. Thought of it may haunt us too. He walks unarmed in bear country in the Brooks Range and calls to mind his totems: ‘bear is one, squirrel, chickadee, wolf, spider . . . they are teacher, messenger, guide’ for him and become so for us. ‘I want to understand what wilderness means to me. For more than three decades, Anchorage-based writer Bill Sherwonit has written extensively about wilderness, the natural history of animals and plants, wildlife management, connection to place, conservation issues, and notions of wildness. He’s contributed stories and photos to a wide variety of national publications and is the author of over a dozen books about Alaska. Ravens and wolverines and bears (and more), oh, my

In one of the blurbs for this book, author Nick Jans calls the book "a well-crafted, eclectic, and engaging combo of memoir, natural history, and keen insight." I couldn't agree more. Toss in that Sherwonit seems to be as entranced by the ordinary as the extraordinaire, even by Alaska standards, and the book offers something for everyone. While a great deal of information is imparted about the various wildlife encountered, Sherwonit doesn't pound you over the head with it and you feel much like you've sat down at the kitchen table with a friend. I found Sherwonit's efforts to include his mother in many of his encounters particularly charming, realizing I share much of the same wonder and appreciation of wildlife as she does. Sherwonit also reminds us to look up and pay attention to what is around us, musing more than once that so many rush past or simply ignore what is before them for something more exciting, ie an aircraft flying overhead in lieu of nesting birds. Bottom line, I highly recommend this book!

A book to read and share...

I had to ration my reading time for Animal Stories. It is such a joyful read, that I wanted to race through it. Once I got a sense of the author's style - highly readable and almost intimate descriptions of his encounters with wild animals - I decided that I wanted to read chapters at the moment they had personal relevance to me. The day I noticed a rare raven in my suburban neighbor, I read the "Ravens in Winter" chapter. The goofy upside-down-hanging squirrels on my bird feeder turned me to "Squirrelly Behavior". Feeling constrained by my urban lifestyle, I lost myself in the "In the Company of Bears". I loved this book! Because it can be read chapter by chapter over time, it's a good choice for someone with limited time for pleasure reading. It would also be an excellent gift book for someone who is struggling with illness or any of life's challenges. It brings the outside inside, in a lovely way.

Calling All Wildlife and Alaska Lovers

The author deftly explores the interface between Alaskan wildlife and an interested human observer from emotional and scientific perspectives. Each essay is a gem of observation and heart-felt reaction. Anyone who loves wildlife, whether an armchair explorer or an intrepid outdoors person, will enjoy these essays and learn a lot about species ranging from chickadees to grizzlies. The settings of the essays are diverse, ranging all over the state, providing wilderness lovers vivid depictions of places they will probably never have the privilege to actually visit. I highly recommend this book as a former Alaskan and wildlife lover.
