Data clean up is fun!

I can't say enough good things about this book! The authors, Ken Puls and Miguel Escobar, present Power Query in a way that is totally accessible to Excel users. There are clear explanations, good examples and files so the reader can perform the steps along with the book. I have gone through the book at least three times, and participated in a training workshop given by the authors, and I continue to learn new things each time.

In the book Ken and Miguel say, "There is no doubt in our minds that Power Query will change the way Excel pros work with data forever." I'm not sure I'm quite to the level as an Excel pro (I hope to be when I grow up!), but this book definitely HAS changed how I work with data. Power Query and the M language makes it fun to do data cleanup!

QuickBooks users problem solver

Probably the only decent book out there that is specifically geared to the power query model. I was looking for a solution to merge two QuickBooks reports I had dumped out to CSV files. This book solved my problem. Can't beat that. If you are a QB user and hate the Advance Report engine, dump that junk and dig into power query.

11/22/16: I have since used PQ extensively since acquiring this book. This is a great starter book, but I quickly flew past it into more complicated areas not covered by this edition. There is a whole lot of stuff Ken and Miguel can go into in a follow up book. They should look at publishing an edition that focuses on the Mashup Query Language solutions itself as a companion to the this book.

Best Reference Out There for Power Query and Its M Language!

Awesome reference - I have used it so much that it is ragged and frayed! And what's neat is that everything that you learn about Power Query (PQ) is translatable to Excel Power BI (where it found as Get Data). I like to describe PQ as the "Excel import wizard on steroids" and it is invaluable to those of us that use/combine/mash together data from disparate sources. This reference has the broadest and deepest compilation of PQ "stuff" out there. Couple that with a well keyed Google/Bing search and you can easily find a way to your data end point.

About the Author
Victoria Fromkin received her bachelor's degree in economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of California, Los Angeles. She was a member of the faculty of the UCLA Department of Linguistics from 1966 until her death, and served as its chair from 1972 to 1976. From 1979 to 1989 she served as the UCLA Graduate Dean and Vice Chancellor of Graduate Programs. She was a visiting professor at the universities of Stockholm, Cambridge, and Oxford. Professor Fromkin served as president of the Linguistics Society of America in 1985, president of the Association of Graduate Schools in 1988, and chair of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Aphasia. She received the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award and the Professional Achievement Award, and served as the U.S. Delegate and a member of the Executive Committee of the International Permanent Committee of Linguistics (CIPL). She was an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Science, the American Psychological Society, and the Acoustical Society of America, and in 1996 was elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences. She published more than one hundred books, monographs, and papers on topics concerned with phonetics, phonology, tone languages, African languages, speech errors, processing models, aphasia, and the brain/mind/language interface--all research areas in which she worked. Professor Fromkin passed away in 2000, at the age of 76.

Robert Rodman received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1961, a master's degree in mathematics in 1965, a master's degree in linguistics in 1971, and a Ph.D. in linguistics in 1973. He has been on the faculties of the University of California at Santa Cruz, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Kyoto Industrial College in Japan, and North Carolina State University, where he is currently professor of computer science specializing in the areas of forensic linguistics, computer speech processing, and speaker verification and identification.

Nina Hyams received her bachelor's degree in journalism from Boston University in 1973 and her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in linguistics from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in 1981 and 1983, respectively. She joined the UCLA faculty in 1983, where she is currently professor of linguistics. Her main areas of research are childhood language development and syntax. She is author of LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AND THE THEORY OF PARAMETERS (D. Reidel Publishers, 1986), a milestone in language acquisition research. She has also published numerous articles on the development of syntax, morphology, and semantics in children. She has been a visiting scholar at the University of Utrecht and the University of Leiden in the Netherlands and has given numerous lectures throughout Europe and Japan.

Fun is the theme

This book might be the most used introductory linguistics book in the world. I am very glad to have read its seventh edition. The number of editions might be proof of the quality and popularity of this book. How many textbooks can be in print for such a long time?

The theme of this book is to make linguistics fun, and accessible. The use of cartoons, the quotes from famous authors, paragraphs discussing everyday use of language, and many more, all make the reader enjoy reading and studying linguistics.

But on the other hand, the effort to make it fun will probably turn those serious students away. Anyways they are here for a university level course on the science of linguistics, where they expect to see compelling arguments, and serious discussions, rather than cartoons and funny word games.

Moreover since this book was first written in the 70's, there are still many outdated data in the seventh edition, although it has been updated.

The chapters on the core fields of linguistics, i.e. phonetics/phonology, syntax, semantics, and historical linguistics, seem to be a little too thin. While chapters on sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, and writing systems can be interesting, students still need to have a solid foundation in the core fields of linguistics before they can successfully tap into the more interdisciplinary fields.

Overall, this is one of the best introductory linguistics textbooks, although it tends to be not very serious, and in-depth, which could be excused for an intro textbook.

Good Introduction

This is a very good introduction to theoretical linguistics and its subdisciplines. Some of the concept are somewhat difficult, but it's nothing that a good re-read can't fix. It covers all the components that make up linguistics i.e. phonology, syntax, etc. but it also adds some cool chapters on language and the brain, language change, and psycholinguistics which are all plusses in my book. This textbook provides good cartoons to illustrate some key points,the exercises are good for beginner's (perhaps some too easy) and the authors provide some really good suggested readings although some might the suggestions insanely difficult to read even after reading this book (for example, after reading the chapter on syntax, it suggests you read Chomsky's minimalist program. If this is the student's first introduction to syntax, then I really doubt they could tackle that book). All in all, I think its a perfect book to use in an introductory language class. The only problem I have with this book is its price. Way too expensive!!!

Sweet, Sweet linguisitcs

I find it odd that some people didn't like this book, for I thought the action thereof was exceedingly sweet. I guess different strokes for different folks. Anyway I took an Introductory linguistics course that used this textbook, and found myself enjoying the reading assignments. I even read chapters I wasn't assigned to and ended up reading the whole thing. The book was easy to follow, entertaining, and really taught me a lot about linguistics.

Hongzhi Wang, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor at Massive Data Computing Center in the Department of Computer Science and Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China. He received his his BSc, MSc and PHD degrees and computer science from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2001, 2003 and 2008, respectively. His research interest is data and information management in general, particular in areas of big data management, particularly in areas of big data management, data quality, XML and graph data management. He has published more than 100 papers in conferences and journals. He was also awarded Microsoft Fellow, IBM PHD Fellowship and Chinese Excellent Database Engineer. His doctoral dissertation is selected as the outstanding doctoral dissertation by China Computer Federation.

Unreadable English

The book, written by a Chinese author, is informative as a reference, however the translation to English is horrendous, making it almost unreadable. If the publisher took the effort to correct this I would rate the book highly, but until then, skip it.

Empowering mistresses by trash-talking wives

Not bad, but as other reviewer stated , you really can tell she has hurt very much to the point that she had been obviously dumped by a married man and also that this man wined, dined, spoiled, and shower in diamonds his WIFE and not her. She focuses on trash talking wives assuming that they ALL are uncaring, unloving, ugly, unsexy, and brains-less women uncapable of keeping an interesting conversation with their husbands, and so on.This is simply far from true. She also states that ALL mistresses are perfect women! professional, with career, very pretty, very smart etc, so why on earth those men do not leave their wives for such wonderful women? Go figure!
There are many contradictory ideas in the book and things that simply do not make sense such as a mistress enjoys the very best from a multi- millionaire married man (could be true) but then she implies that those kind of men stay at the cheapest hotels when they are with their wives! It is pretty obvious that the wife of a man like knows exactly what he can afford!

As I mentioned the book is not bad, I laughed with such non-sense ideas but overall OK.

I would give less...I have never read such egotistical BS in my life. If she actually thinks this is why TAKEN men cheat and that she was more special than any other mistress then she is delusional. Some men do not have self-control and idiots like her actually think they are better than the wives even though married men never left their wives for her. Do not bother reading this filth otherwise you are basically throwing your money away.

I was having an affair with a married man over the past year. It was a pleasant experience, with daily pain, to be sure. I've gone through most of the mental struggles that was mentioned in the book. So it was a good read. If you are having an affair, I highly recommend this book, for the purpose of keeping your perspective and staying cool.

If you are considering whether you should have an affair or not, this book won't give you an answer, and I doubt anybody can give you one except yourself. Like any other experience in life, you learn and grow with it. And if the agony accompanied with the affair doesn't kill you, it would certainly make you stronger and know better what you really want in life.

If you want to know "whether he would leave her for me", this book can help you be prepared for the worst. And as always, the answer is probably "no". But it's probably not a bad answer at all.

Be aware that the author has a heavy dose of cynicism in her writing, which is almost inevitable since you can tell from reading that she was really hurt hard in her own affair(s) and has seen so many others happening. You can hardly expect a woman like her to be all sweet and loving again. But you don't need to let her personal philosophy to affect you. Just take the information part and do your own thinking.

Product arrived on time, as promised. One of the books had slight damage to the cover, either in shipping or may have already been that way, but was very minor.

Joseph Fink created the Welcome to Night Vale and Alice Isn't Dead podcasts. He lives with his wife in New York.

Jeffrey Cranor cowrites the Welcome to Night Vale and Within the Wires podcasts. He also cocreates theater and dance pieces with choreographer/wife Jillian Sweeney. They live in New York.  

Jeffrey Cranor co-writes--along with Joseph Fink--the hit podcast and touring live show Welcome to Night Vale. He also makes theater and dance. He has written more than 100 short plays with the New York Neo-Futurists, co-wrote and co-performed a two-man show (What the Time Traveler Will Tell Us) with Joseph, and collaborated with choreographer (also wife) Jillian Sweeney to create three full-length dance pieces: Imaginary Lines, This could be it., and Vulture-Wally. Jeffrey lives in New York State.

Weird at last, weird at last, God Almighty, weird at last.

If you're a fan of the podcast series and are on the fence about buying this book, do not be. There's something so magical about reading the transcripts, and the forewords by Jeffrey and Joseph are absolutely worth it.

I am so SO satisfied with this. The art, the short but revealing introductions from the authors, and seeing many letters arranged into what I assume to be words but cannot be totally sure of since I'm sure that is, in some way, illegal to comprehend.

Welcome to Night Vale has kept me inspired all through college, and I credit much of my enthusiasm for experimental fiction to the series. Please support the writers of this delightfully weird, beautiful series and own a more permanent version of previously impermanent audio waves.

This book** is awesome. It's a collection of the scripts to the episodes from the first year/season, and includes the script of the live show "Condos" at the end.
The best part of this book, other than carrying around the Night Vale stories, is the comentary before each episode! Commentary about the episodes, how they were written, or how they were recorded or performed, by the writers, guest writers, and voice actors. it's just awesome. Everyone(thing) involved is awesome. The writers are awesome, the actors are awesome, the Dog Park is NOT awesome, Angels aren't real, and Steve Carlsburg*** is a jerk.

It's just a big bundle of happy.

*Not so much a review-review as a municipally approved rambling of joy.

Her clear analysis of the development of the genocide is combined with an extraordinary and broad view of the actions and experiences of those involved. Succinct, eloquent, and more complete a history than many accounts

An absolutely fantastic recounting of the history of one of history's worst atrocities. Aptly written and unflinching in many respects, this should be required reading for courses in Holocaust and world history.

Great Overview of the Holocaust

The author provides a very thorough overview of the Holocaust in WWII, and a brief history of Hitler's rise to power in Germany. The images used in the book are powerful, and well implemented. Highly recommend this book for anyone looking to read more about the Holocaust, or for readers that are just starting to learn about it.
