About the Author

Series editor Pavol Kováč, Ph.D., Dr. h.c., with more than 40 years of experience in carbohydrate chemistry and more than 270 papers published in refereed scientific journals or books, is a strong promoter of good laboratory practices and a vocal critic of the publication of experimental chemistry lacking data that allows reproducibility. He obtained an MSc in Chemistry at Slovak Technical University in Bratislava (Slovakia) and a PhD in Organic Chemistry at the Institute of Chemistry, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava. After postdoctoral training at the Department of Biochemistry, Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana (R. L. Whistler, advisor), he returned to the Institute of Chemistry and formed a group of synthetic carbohydrate chemists, active mainly in oligosaccharide chemistry, which put the Institute on the map for quality synthetic carbohydrate chemistry.

After relocating to the United States in 1981, he first worked at Bachem, Inc., Torrance, California, where he established a laboratory for production of oligonucleotides for the automated synthesis of DNA. In 1983 he joined the National Institutes of Health, where he is currently one of the Principal Investigators and Chief of the Section on Carbohydrates (NIDDK, Laboratory of Bioorganic Chemistry), the world’s oldest research group continuously working on chemistry, biochemistry, and immunology of carbohydrates, originally established by America’s greatest carbohydrate chemist, Claude S. Hudson. Dr. Kováč’s main interest is in development of conjugate vaccines for bacterial diseases from synthetic carbohydrate antigens.

If you don't know who Agrippa was, you shouldn't be reading this review, unless you're a librarian who's been asked to buy the volume. Do an author search for "Agrippa occult" and start there.
Now, assuming that you know who Agrippa (1486-1535) was, and roughly what his Occult Philosophy was, let's talk about this volume.
This is a scholarly critical edition. The copious annotations do not so much explain the text as tell you what Agrippa is quoting or referring to, so you can look up more texts. The introduction is functional, but not terribly helpful to the nonspecialist. On the other hand, when I wrote my book on Agrippa, this thing was a constant and trusty companion; boy am I ever glad I shelled out for this!
Agrippa's book itself is obscure and difficult, but at the same time it is the seminal attempt to develop a philosophical framework for magic as a practice. If you just want to read the book, read it in English (buy the Llewellyn edition) unless your Latin is stunningly good. So if you don't already know the book well, you shouldn't be spending money on this.
The editing is meticulous, including constant explications of Agrippa's many references and sources. There is a wonderful index and bibliography, making the volume exceptionally useful -- Agrippa himself is deliberately confusing and at times seems disorganized. On top of everything else, the editor has included angle braces and further notes so that we get a complete edition of the Juvenile Draft (1510) woven into the final edition (1531/33). I can't say enough good things about the edition.
Every library with a serious early modern collection should have this. Brill's books are extremely expensive, of course, but they are permanent. The paper is acid-free, the binding is very toughly stitched, and so forth. If you shell out for this text, you will still have it a long time from now. If you are not in control of a library's budget, though, you'd better try to get your librarian to order this.
In short, this is a volume for a library, a specialist, or a wealthy Latinist. If you are wealthy enough to afford this and just want a cool edition, bear in mind that you can sometimes find Agrippa's _Opera_ in early 17th C editions for about what this volume costs --- no critical material, of course, but pretty. If you have good reason to want a critical edition, though, this one is not likely to be superseded.

Finally a scholarly edition of this classic.

This book should be at the top of the reading list for anyone interested in Western occultism or magic.
The original Latin text of Agrippa's classic is presented along with critical apparatus clearly showing variant readings in the editions. Includes a great introduction (in English) with a detailed analysis of Agrippa's sources and as well as an insightful and in-depth analysis of Agrippa's extensive 1533 expansion and revision of the text. Complete with helpful bibliographies and indices.
The only disappointment I had was the fact that this edition does not include Agrippa's lengthy recantation, which was included in the 1533 edition.
This is one of the most expensive books I've ever bought, but worth the price, especially for those with a command of Renaissance Latin.

About the Author
Brandi Simonsen, PhD, is Associate Professor of Special Education in the Department of Educational Psychology and a Research Scientist with the Center for Behavioral Education and Research at the University of Connecticut. She also coordinates the University's Graduate Certificate Program in Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support. Dr. Simonsen is an implementation partner with the OSEP Technical Assistance Center on PBIS and serves on the executive board of the Association for Positive Behavior Support. She teaches, provides service, and conducts research in the areas of Tier 1 schoolwide positive behavior support in alternative settings, classwide PBIS, and more intensive (Tiers 2 and 3) supports for students with challenging behavior. Previously, Dr. Simonsen was the director of a nonpublic alternative school for students with disabilities who presented with challenging educational and behavioral needs. In addition to serving as an administrator and clinician, she was certified as a teacher of elementary general education and middle/secondary special education. She has authored a number of scholarly journal articles and book chapters.

Diane Myers, PhD, is Associate Professor of Special Education in the Department of Teacher Education at Texas Woman’s University. Previously, she was Assistant Professor of Special Education at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts, where she created the Certificate of Advanced Studies Program in PBIS. Dr. Myers teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of classwide PBIS, advanced applications of positive behavior supports at all levels, and research and practice in special education. She conducts professional development in classroom management and provides training and support to schools implementing schoolwide PBIS. Her research interests include teacher training and professional development, classroom management, and supporting students with challenging behavior. Previously, she was a special education teacher at an urban middle school. Her first teaching job was at a residential facility for adjudicated adolescents, and she has an ongoing interest in the field of juvenile justice.

The wide range of important applications concerning the acoustic interactions of bubbles necessitates a book of this form which, utilising analogy, description, and formulation, gives a 'physical feel' for the phenomena, whilst also providing thoroughly for mathematically adept readers.
The first half of the book introduces and draws together acoustics, cavitation nucleation and associated fluid dynamics, to examine the free oscillations of bubbles and the resulting acoustic emissions. In the second half, the behaviour and consequences of bubbles in externally-applied acoustic fields is discussed in detail, including the cavitational aspects of erosion and bioeffects.

The champagne of acoustics or the acoustics of champagne?

This is a fine book about an important topic in acoustics. If the field of acoustics is like a bunch of fine wines, this is the champagne!

Acoustic bubbles have many manifestations. These include clinical ultrasound as well as ocean acoustics. It is worthwhile for someone who wishes to be an expert on one of these topics to become familiar with some other applications the study of acoustic bubbles.

The first chapter covers the fundamentals of waves, sound, and wavefronts. Of course, special attention is placed on sound in solid and liquid media. And we also learn about the generation of ultrasound, simulated sound fields, and nonlinear effects in underwater ultrasound beams.

The second chapter teaches us about bubbles. We learn about the tensile strength of liquids, so we'll know what it takes to make them cavitate. And we learn about Rayleigh collapse, so we'll know what it takes to produce decavitation. Next, we review (I hope it is a review!) fluid dynamics, and look at the problem of a rigid sphere moving through a liquid.

In the third chapter, we get to a powerful analogy to a bubble in a liquid, namely a bob of a specified mass attached to a spring. After a quick review of unforced oscillators, we get to the Minnaert frequency (the natural frequency of a spherical gas bubble in a liquid for low-amplitude simple harmonic motion). It's interesting to see if we can thus approximate the sounds of brooks, waterfalls, rainfall, or the ocean.

The next chapter gets us to a discussion of the interaction between a bubble and the sound wave that can drive it into oscillation. We still use the analogy of the bob on a spring, but now we're dealing with a driven oscillator (the author assures us that this is a better approximation that trying to predict the outcome of a horse race by assuming a spherically symmetrical horse). We learn about acoustic emissions from these bubbles, chaotic oscillations of bubbles, and so forth. We're still basically dealing with individual bubbles, of course.

The final chapter deals with the real behavior of acoustic bubble systems. That includes topics such as detection of bubbles, bubble motion and stabilization, and use of bubbles in ultrasonic surgery. And, of course, sonoluminescence, for which there is a discussion of mechanisms as well as what is now a particularly, um, hot topic, temperatures of imploding bubbles.

I enjoyed reading this book. I'll never listen to champagne the same way again.

Not Bad

Overall this is a decent book, and most people working in this field would benefit from much of the hard to find information contained within it. The main problem I have with the book is that the author seems to be totally unaware of who his audience is. For example, at times the author appears to be writing for someone who has never had a single physics/math course, and then one paragraph later he assumes knowledge of advanced mathematical analysis. Case in point: he has been using vector calculus for a while and then suddenly feels the need to explain the difference between a vector and a scalar. Other times it goes the other way, that is, he jumps from talking about simple physical situations which are explained fairly well to complicated nonlinear situations modeled by PDEs that are not derived. Some of the equations are just given, with little explanation as to where they come from. For someone who has had courses dealing with fluid mechanics and sound waves, and has a solid mathematical background, this book is fine. However, an undergraduate not as well versed will be frustrated by the shift from lucid explanations to advanced material and back again.

AN OLD-FASHIONED THANKSGIVING AND OTHER STORIES is a collection of three of Louis May Alcott's short stories. Within the book readers will get a glimpse of life in New England during the nineteenth century that reflects Alcott's childhood, and in particular, the first story, "An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving," takes place during the Thanksgiving holiday in 1881. It is a vivid rendering where readers will easily identify the landscape, the sights and the smells of a family preparing for the festivities from the hasty pudding to the garland of dried apples hung on the wall. And while reading the opening passages of the story, the classic song, "Over the River and Through the Woods," comes to mind which captures the season.

In addition, with most of Alcott's works, the characters are the essence of her stories. This is the case in "An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving" where readers will see how the Bassett family members scamper about anxiously during the holiday, Seth, Roxy, Eph, Prue, Tilly, and Ma and Pa. And to join them, the family joyfully announce the arrival of Aunt Cinthy, Cousin Hety, Mose and Amos.

The other two stories are the insightful part of the book. "How I Went Out to Service" and "Transcedental Wild Oats" resonate the nineteenth century and social issues of the period as they relate to women's roles and the self-sufficient society who journeyed into the wilderness. One will observe two worlds where the narrator in the second story longs to break from convention to a life of respectability under her terms that includes democratic ideas of honesty and honor (39). While the third clearly shows an inkling of the Henry David Thoreau way of life.

AN OLD-FASHIONED THANKSGIVING AND OTHER STORIES provides a sample of Louisa May Alcott's works that may interest those who enjoy American literature and history. And her stories may be read more than once.

Domestic life in early 19th century

Many who has read Luisa May Alcott's books know her work "Little Women". This little piece presents three short stories one of which appears to be a short essay about writer's own experience as a companion. It is interesting to learn about way of life in the early 19th century and the way that a female writer's ability to present that experience to a wide audience. Ms. Alcott is writing from her own experiences, that one can easily relate to. While this is not the compilation of this writer's best work, it definitely gives a nice sneak peak into her style of writing and depiction of the society of her own time. One can easily and quickly learn about women's choices in terms of lifestyle, employment and social status of that time period in American history.
