Little book but mighty!

This is an excellent bridge book for intermediate bridge players. I bought this book for me and my friend when the director of our club told us we needed to learn 2/1 in order to get us to the next level. When we first got this book, it seemed a little Greek and confusing to us since we hadn't had any bridge lessons other than 2 beginner classes. So, we abandoned the book and kept playing. Fast forward 3 years later. After having played at the club and tournaments and taken some lessons, I dug up this tiny booklet and started reading and memorizing. To my surprise, I was able to follow the book along and things started to make sense and fall into place. Now, this is my go to book because it has more than 2/1 information but how to bid in general.

What is nice about this book is it's small and contains concise information. I would highly recommend this book to all intermediate bridge players to have for reference and learn about the basics of 2/1.

Like another reviewer wrote, I remember the shipping being a little high and saw that the shipping rate is reasonable (book rate at $3) through Baron Barclay's website.

An excellent guide,BUT

A purchase price of $354.18 for Ms. Berry's book on bridge bidding has to be a gross error or mistake. I am trying to replace one, same as illustrated, that I purchased from Amazon, 2-3 years ago, for less than $15.00 including shipping. Description: It's spiral bound the size of a small (3X5) note pad with about 75 pages of text related to bridge bids used with a bidding system called 2 over 1. The "book" represents a compact summary of those conventions, and the concept is popular with duplicate bridge players. It is informative,and readable, but $354.18, sounds like the pricing for a toilet seat purchased by the federal government. Review follow up,11/24. If interested in the "BOOK" described above ,Amazon price listed for $354.18, I found it on line for $10.00 in stock plus shipping, see the website for Baron Barkley Bridge Supply.

Not a good value due to exorbitant S&H

The book was exactly what I wanted. However, I ordered 3 books and was charged $3.99 S&H per book. Keep in mind that these books are very small. The total cost for shipping all 3 books at the same time was under $3! I will never order from these people again.

Reading this memoir was an experience in itself!!

Amazing Book!

Felt so great reading this.

Reading biography of great people is my hobby to learn from them. But reading this memoir was an experience in itself!!

This book takes its readers into the life journey of Om Swami in a special way, where you can't stop but keep visualizing each and every scene in front of the eyes, and you feel like you are witnessing every moment of Om Swami's life in search of truth.

I don't find proper word in English to describe how amazing this book is! It gives you some divine pleasure while reading, I simply but strongly just recommend to buy this book and experience yourself to see how it feels!

If Truth Be Told – A Monk’s Memoir.
It is not just a book, but the journey of the author. While you embark on this journey with him, you are sure to find your own path or if you have found it already, it will surely guide you through it. In the challenging times of today, when it is hard to believe or pick from the pool of information available to us, just one read of this book would leave you with no choice. Truth has a magnetic pull to it and the one who is really seeking it, would recognize it in no time.
I cried, laughed and got lost, I felt as though I was witnessing every moment. At some point in time each of us wish to lead a life of truthfulness, of principles that we want to stand by, but we tend to be weak (I do). But the author, brings forth to life, the ocean of myriad possibilities – which we were either told to bury, as a child, or learnt to do so .This is not just an inspirational book, this is much much more if you would trust me.
While yes, it guides us on the spiritual path but there is more to it. I would say it makes us gather all the strength we have in our own selves and helps us walk on our path. It is not only a narration of incidents, but at the same time it also shakes our conditioned souls to remove the veils that we have been living with.
I have been reading the author’s blog – omswami.com for some time now, and can tell you that I could never have imagined that behind the simplicity and humbleness which is evident from the blog posts lies a being who rose beyond all the barriers and painstakingly pursued his dream – To Meet God. He left behind everything, family, friends, unimaginable wealth and even refused to provide basic comfort to his own body.
We all have our own inferences, and it offers one to everyone. You will be astonished to what you are holding in your hands and then at yourself. I have read the book twice now and about to finish the third read. I am amazed whenever I read it , it just answers the questions within yet so subtly.
A must read for everyone. No matter who you are, which culture or tradition you belong to, what question you have. You may be on a spiritual journey or may not be .. but you have to read it once in your life. This book has a lot to offer. If you haven’t read it you are missing on something in life.

About the Author
Susan T. Fiske is Eugene Higgins Professor, Psychology and Public Affairs, Princeton University (Ph.D., Harvard University; honorary doctorates, Université Catholique de Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium; Universiteit Leiden, Netherlands; Universität Basel, Switzerland). She investigates social cognition, especially cognitive stereotypes and emotional prejudices, at cultural, interpersonal, and neuro-scientific levels. Author of over 300 publications and winner of numerous scientific awards, she has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences.  

Sponsored by a Guggenheim, her 2011 Russell-Sage-Foundation book is Envy Up, Scorn Down: How Status Divides Us. Her most recent book is The HUMAN Brand: How We Respond to People, Products, and Companies (with Chris Malone, 2013). With Shelley Taylor, she has written four editions of a classic text: Social Cognition (2013, 4/e) and on her own, three editions of Social Beings: Core Motives in Social Psychology (2013, 3/e). She has lately edited Beyond Common Sense: Psychological Science in the Courtroom (2008), the Handbook of Social Psychology (2010, 5/e), Social Neuroscience (2011), the Sage Handbook of Social Cognition (2012), and Facing Social Class: How Societal Rank Influences Interaction (2012). Currently an editor of Annual Review of Psychology, PNAS, and Policy Insights from Behavioral and Brain Sciences, she is also President of the Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences. Her graduate students arranged for her to win the University’s Mentoring Award, and international advisees arranged for her to win the APS Mentoring Award. 

Neil Macrae is a professor in social psychology from Aberdeen where he completed his ph.d. in 1990. He was until recently at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, and he is currently professor of social cognition at the University of Aberdeen. His research is on core aspects of social cognition (e.g. person understanding, self) using both behavioral and neuroimaging approaches. Neil Macrae is among the pioneers of social cognition, contributing (with M. Hewstone) the entry (article) on “social cognition” The Blackwell dictionary of cognitive psychology already in 1990. Lately, many more social psychologists have flocked to the brain scanners to resolve longstanding social and philosophical questions (such as questions of self) with neuroimaging methods. Neil Macrae is among the best examples of this feature of social cognition, and we have asked him to give one of the opening lectures to present social cognition as a scientific field.

Pain of Humanity: Perhaps the Best 20th Century Drama

The great bulk of Eugene O'Neill's work was done between about 1914 and 1933, a period which saw him win Pulitzer Prizes for Beyond The Horizon, Anna Christie, and Strange Interlude as well as create The Emperor Jones, The Hairy Ape, Desire Under the Elms, The Great God Brown, and Mourning Becomes Electra. But around 1933 O'Neill--who struggled against physical ailments, alcoholism, and a host of personal demons--fell silent.

Although O'Neill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1936, he would remain silent for some ten years, leaving most to believe he had written himself out, was burned out, that his career was over. But in spite of tremendous personal issues, O'Neill continued to write in private, and during this period he would generate a string of powerful plays, many of which would not be released for performance until after his death in 1953. The legendary Long Day's Journey Into Night, closely based on his own family life, was written in the early 1940s. It was first performed in 1956--some three years after his death--at which time it too won the Pulitzer Prize.

The play presents the story of the Tyrone family. James Tyrone is a famous stage actor, now aging; his wife Mary is a delicately beautiful but sadly worn woman named Mary. Their two sons are studies in contrast: Jamie, in his late 30s, is wild--fond of wine, women, and song--and seen as a bad influence on younger Edmund, who is physically frail but intellectually sharp. The action takes place at their summer home, and begins in the morning; the family seems happy enough--but clearly there is something we do not know, something working under the surface that gives an unnatural quality to their interaction.

Over the four acts and next four hours the morning passes into afternoon, the afternoon into night. And we will learn the truth: the history of money grubbing, the alcoholism, the drugs, the personal failures, the seemingly endless cycle of self-defeating, self-destructive behavior in which the four are locked beyond hope of redemption. And as it progresses the play gathers itself into an almost unendurable scream of agony, a scream of truly cosmic proportions.

Why, you might ask, would someone wish to read--much less sit through--such a play? A work so painful that it often becomes difficult to continue reading or to look at the stage? I myself asked this question when I first encountered it. Over the years I have done quite a bit of theatre. In the early 1980s I played the role of Edmund; in the late 1990s I played the role of Jamie. On both occasions I found the play horrifically painful to perform. On both occasions I wondered if such a painful play could find an audience in small-town America. On both occasions Long Day's Journey Into Night sold out and not a person left the theatre before each performance ended.

Because, I think, the play taps into something that is universal but which is extremely difficult to express in simple terms. As O'Neill might say himself, it has a touch of the poet--but of a failed poet. Somehow, in some unique way, it speaks to the self-knowledge we all have of the hidden dreams that never came true, the little accommodations, the big and small failures that have stung us and changed us and over time made us--for better or worse--the beings that we are. It has humanity. It makes us see our own humanity. It makes us acknowledge the humanity of those around us.

Many, myself among them, regard this as O'Neill's finest play--and considering the great power that many of his works have, that is saying a great deal. It is also in some respects one of his most accessible plays: shorn of the experimentalism to which O'Neill was frequently drawn and beautifully simple, beautifully direct, even those unaccustomed to reading playscripts will find it a rapid and powerful read. For this reason it is really the only O'Neill script I recommend to casual readers. And I recommend it very, very strongly indeed. A great drama, both on the page and on the stage.

O'Neill at his best

Long Day's Journey into Night is the play in which Eugene O'Neill, as he says in the dedication, had to "face [his] dead at last" by writing about the tragic dysfunctions of James, Mary, Jamie, and Edmund Tyrone, characters based respectively on O'Neill's father, mother, and brother, and O'Neill himself. It is set entirely at the O'Neill residence and takes place over the course of the day on which the family doctor confirms that 23 year-old Edmund has tuberculosis and must go to a sanatorium. There is relatively little action in the play aside from that; most of the dialogue relates to the other members of the Tyrone family facing the various problems that haunt them every day of their lives: Mary is addicted to morphine; Jamie is an alcoholic and at 33 seems unlikely to amount to anything; and James also has an alcohol problem but more importantly is still bitter about his childhood, which was cut short when he was obliged to go to work at a machine shop at the age of 10 because of the departure of his father.
The whole Tyrone family is in a state of despair, and it's hard to think of an author better at capturing despair than O'Neill (in no small part, one suspects, because he came of age in the sort of environment depicted in this play). O'Neill was certainly bitter about his past, but, importantly, he doesn't lose perspective. Although the way the Tyrones treat each other ranges from neutral to downright cruel, O'Neill does a splendid job of balancing this against the fact that they all love each other deeply and feel very unnerved whenever they realize that they're treating each other unfairly. Despite all the problems he faced as a young adult, O'Neill always viewed his family with a good deal of love and reverence, and that comes through in the play. As Mary puts it, "None of us can help the things life has done to us. They're done before you realize it, and once they're done they make you do other things until at last everything comes between you and what you'd like to be, and you've lost your true self forever." The tragedy of Long Day's Journey into Night lies in the fact that these great individuals have lost their true selves due to the various demons that haunt their lives.
Some of O'Neill's works could reasonably be criticized for featuring relatively one-dimensional characters and formulaic plots. In the case of Long Day's Journey, though, because O'Neill was able to rely on his own experiences, all four main characters are exceptionally deep and balanced, and the plot is distinctly unpredictable. Though I've very much enjoyed all the O'Neill plays I've read, it seems that in Long Day's Journey he finally put together all his talents and produced his crowning achievement.

O Neal is ruthlessly honest in this sordid, beautiful play

I read the play when I was 19. I stumbled upon it on a dime rack at the library. One day, I was moving and had some time on my hands until the movers arrived to haul away my stuff. I pulled out my copy and was never the same again. I sat on the floor and read from the late morning to dusk--when the light was no longer sufficient to read by. I hadn't noticed that my shoulder had begun to ache or that my throat was screaming for water, I was absorbed in the play as if I was receiving a vision. Anyone who claims that the play is not well-written doesn't understand literature, nor have they seen the staged production. (I'd highly recommend the movie with Katherine Hepburn). The honesty of the playwright will put you through an emotional ringer that is difficult to detach yourself from long after the reading is done. The fog horn, the deception, the cutting words of the players all haunt your dreams. This is a masterpiece.

My past is tainted, but how surprised would she be if she found out I haven’t been with anyone in longer than I cared to admit? How shocked would Charlotte be if I admitted I’ve stayed away from other girls because I want her that badly?

A perfect stepbrother love story

Finally, a stepbrother book that turns out the way I wanted!
Derek has it bad for his stepsister, Charlotte. He knows she's the only one for him but she hates him. He never thinks she feels the same way.
How is he going to get to her?
When another guy makes a move on Charlotte, Derek's caveman comes roaring out. He can only hope she lets him in.
I loved this book so much. The ending is perfect. A must read

Two high school seniors trying to figure out where they stand with each other.

Derek and Charlotte have been step-siblings for 3 years and both are attracted to the other. Derek is now obsessed with Charlotte and wants her as his no matter the consequences. Charlotte is a good girl and is sick of Derek and his bad reputation and ways. Derek finally takes matter into his own hands and sets about making Charlotte realize that she is the one for him, that there are no others. Charlotte, with the help of her mother, gets over her apprehension and stands next to Derek. It was a short read and did have a good ending.

Quick and sweet.

I admit I wasn't sure what to expect from this one, since everybody said how much of a player (aka. the title name) he was. But there was no OW drama at all. What he did mention of his past sex life didn't bother me, since his feelings for 'his woman' came across really strong and sincere, that made me forget all his previous ONSs'.

I liked seeing his many layers. From a complete jackass to a sweet and caring lover. Also, I could relate to h's situation and her fears of her parents disapproval. I was not shocked but definitely surprised of the parents reaction when they found out (specially after the way they found out, ahem).
The epilogue was really sweet, too.

A great short and steamy taboo read.

Safety gang: It's safe. There is no OW drama but there is one scene with OM when he flirts with h. Of course H gets super jealous and interferes. As for H's sexual past, he didn't apologize for it and to be honest, it didn't bother me at all. Nothing was descriptive. Also, no condoms were used and h is a virgin, while H is a renewed man-ho. He didn't sleep with anyone for a year, ever since he started to have sexual feelings for h.
