About the Author

Susan L. Slocum is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Tourism and Event Management at George Mason University, Manassas, Virginia. Sue has worked in the area of regional planning and development for 15 years and has worked with rural communities in Tanzania, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Her primary focus is on rural sustainable development, policy implementation, and food tourism, specifically working with small businesses and communities in less advantaged areas.  Sue received her doctoral education from Clemson University and has worked at the University of Bedfordshire and at Utah State University.

Carol Kline is an Associate Professor of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Appalachian State University in the Department of Management.  She received her Ph.D. in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management from North Carolina State University, where she provided outreach on tourism development issues to North Carolina’s rural communities. Carol has worked in a variety of geographical and cultural settings including New England, Colorado, Germany, the Republik of Moldova, Grenada, Peru, Cuba, and the South Eastern U.S. Her research interests focus on rural tourism development including how to create a supportive environment for tourism entrepreneurs, the role of sustainable food systems in tourism, the impacts of tourism on various community ‘capitals’, and early tourist markets (such as scientists) in burgeoning and rural destinations. 

Andrew Holden is Professor of Environment and Tourism and Director for the Institute of Tourism Research (INTOUR) at the University of Bedfordshire. His research interests include environmental ethics; connection to nature; poverty alleviation; and the green economy.  He has published six books on the themes of environment and development and made over 40 contributions to academic journals, conference proceedings and book chapters. He has worked on several externally funded research and consultancy projects related to tourism development and the environment, including in Nepal, Russia, Ghana, Indonesia, Turkey and Cyprus. He sits on the editorial boards of several tourism journals including Annals of Tourism Research.

The Confidence Code

I would like to see everyone who teaches even one girl, young woman, adult female, etc. read this book. We need, desperately, to change the way women think of themselves. It took nearly 80 years for me to gain the self-confidence that my brothers seem to have inherited along with other genes. We must do better. There is a great deal of evidence to support my contention that our mental capacity is as good as or greater than our male counterparts. Let's do whatever is necessary to keep our females acting this truth. This book is a great beginning! Jo Seier-Doofe

It's not a total waste, but not very helpful

I'm suspicious of some of the five star reviews of this book. If you check out their total reviews, for many this is their only review, and for others, they have just 2 or 3 reviews, all 5 star. And they gush a bit too much about this book. I'm having difficulty getting through this book because it's boring. It's mainly stories about wealthy, highly educated women, or celebrities, who expressed at some point that they felt lucky or unworthy, etc. There are other things in the book, and it is enlightening in some respects. But it's not geared toward helpful advice for the average woman. I agree with the several other reviews for this book that say much the same thing as I am saying. It's not a total waste of money, and if the stats apply to you, you may find it more applicable to yourself.

I did find one thing in the book that I am using, which is that women apologize all the time, whether it's justified or not. I've noticed that I do the same, so am trying to alter this. The response has not been great. The problem is, and perhaps the reason why, women appear to lack confidence and apologize, is because the response when they don't do that is not good. The goal is to get certain things, whether it's a job or a raise or congeniality in the office. I believe that women have learned how to win the end game through experience, and that experience has shown that the best way to do this is to APPEAR more subserviant and pleasant than you are. I saw a documentary once about how girl toddlers & boy toddlers are treated differently, and wondered why girls cry more than boys. You could see in the test that when girl toddlers cried in a child pen area, they got picked up more often than the boys did when they cried. So the girls learned that to cry is to get the result desired, and boys learned that crying did them no good. So the accomplished women in this book, for all their assertions that they attribute their success to luck or whatever, actually did achieve what they wanted, using precisely the things that this book is saying not to use.

Maybe the book changes a bit in the second half. If so, I'll update this review. Don't get me wrong...it's interesting. Just not a practical guide for the average American woman.

Zen and the art of confidence

My curiosity was piqued immediately. Do I focus on competence over confidence? And what really is confidence anyway. In "The Confidence Code," written with great insight, openness and a thoughtful and measured approach, the authors demystify the value of confidence in the marketplace and in everyday life and why it is some of us have it and some us don't. Mixing the right levels of science, intrigue, example, humor and humility--they even go as far as personal genetic testing to see how they fare on the confidence scale--the reader has all the available wisdom to "crack" the confidence code and better understand its impact on just about everything we do. Personally, I found myself listening to conversations in a different way--did a woman at my table just say "he was acting just like a woman and apologizing for everything all the time" --and thinking about my own effectiveness at work and with people in general. It was surprising. This is definately a book that will be greatly talked about, learned from and enjoyed. I highly recommend it!

His books are great. Wonderful characters. Terrific plots with unique twists.

And while I did guess the end of this one, I was a bit surprised.

A copy of an old crime???

The basic premise is that a well off banker decided to see how it feels to commit a perfect crime and not get caught. He expects the world to laud him for doing the crime twice. He did not account for several other factors as well. He thought he was dyeing of cancer, thus if caught he would not go to jail.

As is typical of this series the criminal is highly intelligent, well educated and has not resolved childhood family issues.

The hero and the FBI agent work well together. Will they remain partners, develop a strong friendship or possibly more?

All in all, a well written story with many facets and changes. There were some questions left in answered, especially regarding accomplices which feel should have been addressed.

Enjoy the read while I pursue book 4.

Entertaining and a good read. I was distracted by the lack od depth in explanations of the capture and escape situations, as well as the dated conversations, but the characters and scene descriptions were enough to make me read on. Taken as a whole, book three made me reach quickly for book four.
