Comprehensive Review of Adolescence

We used this text in my social work school in 1995. Since then I have given away my copy and I'm sorry I did. The book begins with Freud and covers the works of Peter Blos, Carol Gilligan and Erik Erikson.
If you don't have the time to look into the source texts then this is a good book for you. This book gives a broad overview of adolescence and in the cases of Freud and Erikson, an in-depth treatment on the various pre-adolescent stages. Most illuminating for me was the chapter on one of America's greatest contributions to this field, Harry Stack Sullivan. His chapter on Erikson is also quite good. But, if you have the time, read some of the source books. I recommend Erikson's CHILDHOOD AND SOCIETY, IDENTITY: YOUTH AND CRISIS; Gilligan's IN A DIFFERENT VOICE, and Sullivan's THE INTERPERSONAL THEORY OF PSYCHIATRY.

It's a little wordy and tends to complicate things and not explaining them in the simplest terms. But it's got some good information and I've enjoyed it more than some of my other textbooks.

The final word in automobile history reference works

The Beaulieu Encyclopedia is easily the single most comprehensive reference work I've found on car history. Any marque that is at all well-known is covered by a substantial entry in these books, and beyond this there are countless entries on other brands as well -- from the uncommon to the most fantastically obscure. If I have any complaint, it's that the books themselves are quite large and this amount of material could have certainly been bound as a four-volume set.

Note that there are separate Amazon listings for the two-volume and three-volume Beaulieu set. My understanding is that the three-volume set is a later edition, so that's probably the one you want. Not all used booksellers in the Amazon Marketplace are careful to list their set on the right product page, so it's important to pay attention to this to be sure you're getting what you want. Beyond this, there is also a special "Coachbuilding" Beaulieu volume to supplement the main encyclopedia. This is sold separately.

Reading about procrastination is also procrastination, so get this book and stop searching for the ultimate answer.

I'm a chronic procrastinator on a journey to become a more productive and efficient person. In the last couple of months I've read a number of books on procrastination and this is the best so far. This is a concise book that offers practical advice on how to break our nasty procrastination habits (habits is the key word here). What I found particularly useful about this book, is that it also explains the cognitive and behavioural biases that underlie procrastination. This is particularly important to me, since I just can't do something if I don't understand the rational behind it.
Okay, I should stop procrastinating and get back to work now.

Help yourself!

I always tried to read a book on this topic. But they are always too long, so it is really easy to procrastinate reading them. But this book is very different. Very concise, very to the point, and gets to the root of the problem as quickly as possible. You can learn a lot in a very short time from this book. Recommend it to anyone who has problem with procrastination.

Good in small doses

I'm a grad student reading this for a class on 'heritage tourism.' I've enjoyed the flow of his sentences and the interesting images, but I agree with Kenneth (an earlier reviewer): when a hundred-page chapter can be summarized in one page, I've tended to skim quite a bit.

In our class we've read chapters 1,2,5, and 6, and that's made the book a lot more manageable! These chapters have focused on how modern people use the past for present needs, the issues that come with too much focus on the past, and just how we can know 'the past' (through collective history, individual memory, and tangible relics). Chapter 6 is one of the most interesting, as it emphasizes how we change the past (understood as a mental object we've created) through using it and twisting it to serve our purposes.

If you're running short on time, his table of contents and chapter headings are fairly extensive, so it's possible to get a good sense of the book by looking at it's skeleton. Plus, do make time to read at least ten pages or so to get a feel for his writing! If you're a literature sort of person, it's enjoyable and fluid in small doses. :-D

The Past is our Remembrance and Imagination of it

This is an ambitious effort. It is a comprehensive effort to understand how Humanity relates to, and makes use of the Past. And a central focus is that Past which is in cultural monuments and great creations.

I admit that reading this book I felt overwhelmed and confused by the multiplicity of categories and uses, by the variety of learning and connections. I seemed to lose my inner checkposts, my way of measuring whether what was being said was true to my experience, or not.

And here I felt the strong distinction between the 'public memory' which as I understand it is by and large the subject of the work, and the kind of private individual memory through which we interpret and give meaning to our own lives.

Decent vocabulary

This thematic vocabulary is an excellent way to learn the Russian language. There is another thematic vocabulary published by Hueber, a German publisher, called "Grundwortschatz Russisch", which can be purchased at Amazon.de. I recommend the German title as well because it is up-to-date. The person reviewing the book above states there is a lack of vocabulary relating to military and government. I think the author of "Using Russian Vocabulary" provided as much material as possible considering he was sick and has possibly passed away. However, if you need military vocabulary, try the Six Language Visual Dictionary by Perun, an Ukrainian publisher. The languages are Ukrainian, English, German, French, Spanish, and Russian. This can possibly be purchased as [...] per ISBN 978-966-569-249-2. But beware, there are other visual dictionaries the publisher publishes, and they do not contain Russian or Ukrainian. The Firefly Five Language Visual Dictionary, which contains the same exact visual pictures, only contains English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian.

Absolutely by far the best vocabulary book I know!

This book is absolutely WONDERFUL for learning new vocabulary! not only does it include detailed lists of vocabulary on many useful topics, it contains a wealth of information on the origins of many words which makes retaining the vocabulary much easier and more interesting. If you haven't purchased this book yet, just do it! Don't even think twice, just get it and you won't regret it!

Very useful but deficient in some areas

This book is very useful for expanding your Russian vocabulary, particularly for words that are necessary for daily life but aren't often taught in standard language-learning textbooks. In many areas it is quite comprehensive. However, there are at least two areas where it is deficient: government and the military. Perhaps this is in part an ideological choice on the part of the authors. But, like it or not, students of any language need to be equipped with the vocabulary for these areas of human activity, and this book falls short in not providing it. It's a shame because the book is very comprehensive in so many other areas.

A Rare Kind of Excellence

Splendidly plotted and written, this is a novel for the younger reader that might well be turned away by literary agents and turned down by publishers now. It does everything the writing programmes say not to do, yet it has a rare kind of subtlety and sympathetically depicts the dilemmas of those "vexed and troubled Englishmen" who broke with the mother country. I cannot praise the novel highly enough.

An absolute must for anyone interested in US history.

To my shame I only knew this story via the Disney film. The book itself is excellent; a wonderful reading experience for young people (and not so young!) who want a sane and scholarly glimpse of life in pre-revolutionary Boston.
The amazing thing is that I and my family all knew the author's family, Esther Forbes sisters both lived in my home town. Her brother- in- law took a portrait of me as a child (and won a first prize with it!) "Johnny Tremain" is an excellent companion read for a youngster who's parent(s) are reading her magnificent work, "Paul Revere and the World He Lived In." For the larger work she received the Pulizter; for the smaller one, the Newberry Award.
I bought this book as a birthday present for my grandniece who lives near Boston and has the imagination to appreciate exploring Boston's "Freedom Trail." I think it well may be a family affair this summer!
I hope Amazon continues to carry these classics. We need them now, perhaps especially now!

Fun and exciting, but also teaches young readers.

This was an excellent book to help young readers to understand the time of the revolutionary war, but from the point of view of the people who lived at that time. It was a little slow at the start for my ten year old boy, but in the end he was very happy we read it and learned a lot about US history.
