Don't bother

Many of the references in this book are to British culture. The ideas are ridiculous and either made up by the author, or they are recycled old riddles. The author writes, "I do not mean to suggest that the situations, once explained, will seem realistic in everyday-world terms..." Well, he's right. You won't solve these, not because you aren't smart enought, but because you won't care after the first one.

Example (paraphrased): Why did the sexual product industry experienced an uptick in sales in WWII? Answer: The army bought all of the blow-up dolls and dressed them as paratroopers to throw the Germans off.

Worth it if you can pick it up for a dollar or two.

Picked this one up at a second hand book sale. Some of the puzzles are quite good, some are recycled oldies (like the town with only two barbers), some are adaptions of real-life events--which is annoying if you're not familiar with them--and some have clearly been made up by the author. The latter group is easy to identify - look for contrived situations and/or awkward stabs at humour. Still, a bit of fun for a quiet evening if you let someone else ask yes/no questions; more entertaining than Solitaire but less than Go Fish.

Focusing on the daily life of Widow Elizabeth Pratt, a shopkeeper from early eighteenth-century Newport, Rhode Island, Christina J. Challenging the "emulation thesis," a common assumption that wealthy elites led fashion and culture change while middling sorts only followed, Hodge shows how middling consumers were in fact discerning cultural leaders, adopting genteel material practices early and aggressively. By focusing on the rise and emergence of the middle class, this book brings new insights into the evolution of consumerism, class, and identity in colonial America.

Christina J. Hodge is Coordinator for Academic Partnerships at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University. She teaches in Museum Studies and Anthropology for the Harvard Extension School and Harvard Summer School, and she has lectured on anthropology at Harvard University as part of the Harvard Yard Archaeology Project. As a scholar-practitioner, she regularly publishes and presents on the archaeology and history of Harvard University and colonial New England, as well as on the Peabody's work with descendant and academic communities. Hodge's research focuses on social archaeology, museum anthropology, material culture studies, and public archaeology.

Poorly formatted

I bought the Kindle copy of this book mostly for the convenience factor. I recommend AGAINST doing this.

As a social work student, I am wanted to learn about reflective practice but found this eBook horrible formatted. The font size and color changed randomly. Page numbers showed up in the middle of the page and I suspect that some content was missing as some paragraphs referred to things that didn't exist.

The content that was available was good but I didn't end up finishing it. I returned it for a refund.

I'm going to buy the print copy. I suggest that anyone interested in this book do the same.
