PreS-Gr 2—Richard hears a sound, a scary sound at bedtime. He tries to convince himself that there are no monsters. But even hugging Lionheart, his beloved stuffed animal lion, does not give him enough courage. So, he runs. He runs and runs and runs, wearing his pajamas with the lion's tail and furry lion cap, clutching Lionheart all the way. Through the streets, over the hills, into the forest and fields, he runs. He knows he's being chased, and he does not stop until he reaches a magical jungle full of wonders and animals, both big and small. Along the way, however, he drops Lionheart. And now the monster is coming. So, he runs again, until he runs into— literally—Lionheart, who morphs into a huge, brave lion. Together they and the animals go "away from the monster. Away from his fears." They see wondrous things and a beautiful Lost City. Richard forgets he was scared, but then the monster returns. Now, however, all the animals, Richard, and Lionheart issue one loud ROAR, and the monster and all of Richard's fears are gone "once and for all." The last scene shows Richard back in his bed with Lionheart, the stuffed animal, in his lap. The digitally enhanced illustrations are dreamy, suitable for a fantasy. Collingridge has nicely captured the look of both fear and wonder in Richard's face. The overall palette is dark but not scary. VERDICT This fantasy about facing one's fears is well-suited for a bedtime tale or one-on-one sharing.—Roxanne Burg, Orange County Public Library, CA

My daughter loved this book!
By T. Murrell
Richard is scared. He knows that monsters don't exist, but the noises he keeps hearing in the darkness of his bedroom are frightening. So he takes his stuffed animal, Lionheart, and runs away, as fast as he can. He runs so far that he reaches a magical jungle filled with animals. Lionheart then becomes a real lion and teaches Richard about being brave.
The illustrations are classic and fill each page with imagination and beauty. The style reminds me of Where the Wild Things Grow, and will be a favorite with both children and parents. The font is large and the vocabulary fits well for the intended age. Children will be able to relate to Richard and his flight from something scary. The message that the text is bringing out will be great for young children who need to face their fears. This book would be great for parents with small children, or used in a classroom setting to talk about being brave.
I received this book free of charge from Children's Lit in exchange for my honest review.

By Dad of Divas
This was a beautiful book that has has not only amazing illustrations but also offers a wonderful story of bravery and conquering your fears. The book really allows the reader to be able to see fear in a new way. My oldest daughters loves lions and while this is written for a younger reader she loved the book the story and the illustrations. The book was wonderful and one that you need to read with your kids.

Visually arresting
By Dione Basseri
The dust jacket of this book boasts that it is a "cinematic romp," which is a bit of exaggeration, but it's still a very pretty book. Collingridge seems to specialize in soft lines and majestic views, with almost every page seeming to show a world too large to exist. And, technically, it doesn't this being another of those books where everything takes place in the child's imagination. However, for the most part, it's not too fantasy-based.
I can't see this book winning a Caldecott Medal, but it is still quite nice, and especially good for animal lovers. There are lots of different animals, mostly from Africa, to point out, so this would be a good book to teach your kids about some new animals, like meerkats.
I think this would be a good gift book. It's so pretty to look at, and the story is general enough to appeal to most kids. For individual family purchases, perhaps check it out from your library, first.
