Great for review, bad for learning

While in school, I enjoyed the pictures and such. But found the book tough to learn from. Maybe I don't handle gigantic lists that well.
Now that I'm out practicing, I like the book alot as a quick reference/refresher.

Great book for covering the basics!

This is a wonderful book for those who are interested in the basics of pharmacology. Every chapter covers a different aspect of the body and the effects that pharmaceuticals have on it. Covering difficult concepts about the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems, the book utilizes charts and "cute" animations to illustrate how certain drugs act on specific receptors. In a sense this book could be considered to be a version of Cliff's Notes for pharmacology students.

However, while the book is straightforward and correct about the actions of the categories of drugs (for example, beta blockers), there are several errors in the pharmaceutical charts regarding the specific actions and side effects of certain medcines. Please check with your professors or a more knowledgable authority concerning these errors.

Not very helpful.

I'm not sure how this book ended up in the Ridiculously Simple series. Maybe because of brevity with the subject? It reads like an abbreviated text. It does put some abbreviated information in table form, but it's overly complicated and doesn't streamline the information any better than a typical, bloviating text book does. Not interesting. Few helpful pointers. Just the same information presented in a slightly different way. Well, almost the same. It actually gets quite a few things wrong. For instance, it states that D1 and D2 receptors are both inhibitory. It even places emphasis on this in the text with Italics. In fact, D1 receptors are excitatory, but D2 receptors are inhibitory. This is CRITICAL to know in order to understand movement disorders such as Parkinsonism so you can know how the drugs work. Another example, it indicates that the half life for fluoxetine is 48 - 72 hours. While technically correct, the pharmacokinetics appear to be nonlinear resulting in a longer half life with more than one dose, which is how a patient is going to take it. Further, its first metabolite is norfluoxetine, which is similarly as potent as fluoxetine, but has a longer half life. They don't present this critical information in this book. Another incorrect statement: They claim that drug tolerance to psychoactive substances such as alcohol is due to cytochrome P450 inactivation. This is not correct. While cytochrome P450 is the most important factor in the liver's metabolizing of many substances, tolerance is actually a purely psychological factor. Studies have shown that tolerance occurs when drug use occurs in the same surroundings repeatedly. If a person who has tolerance to the drug is moved to unfamiliar surroundings, all tolerance to the substance is gone. With abuse, and increasing use of a substance, of course cytochrome P450 will build up to handle the increased load, but simply having an understanding of Michaelis-Menten kinetics shows that there is a maximum rate that will be achieved, and the deactivation rate of compounds will not proceed any further based on just increasing the enzyme to match the substrate concentration increases. Therefore, although the person can consume more of the substance, this doesn't mean that they have a tolerance. They get just as intoxicated, they just don't overdose as easily.

After reading several cpa books, this one actually gave me a detailed working guide that will be profitable. The part on keyword research is the best I have read thus far from any source (and I have read many!). This book is worth the money you spend on it. Also, I don't normally write reviews but this book is that insightful!

About the Author
Bill Carruthers was born in 1924 in Glasgow. He won a bursary to Glasgow University, where he graduated with a first class honours degree in 1946 and a PhD in 1949. He moved to Exeter in 1956, working first for the Medical Research Council and then, from 1968, as a Lecturer then Senior Lecturer at the Department of Chemistry, University of Exeter. A beautiful book

This is one of the best books avaliable for understanding the beauty as well as utility of Organic Synthesis, a science which is also an art. Carruthers' book is in my opinion an excellent book for beginning graduate level.The chapters and the examples are very well chosen to illustrate the elegance of synthetic methods. I especially liked the chapters on oxidations and reductions. Examples of naturals products syntheses are ample and increase the utility of the book. All the references are clubbed together at the end of the book. All in all, a fascinating book for the serious organic chemistry student. However, it could use an update to reflect the new methods and syntheses of the 90's.

Modern Bible for Depression Recovery

This book, written by a psychiatrist who himself has suffered from depression, will be controversial because it describes depression as "the beginning of an unfolding process of self-awareness, not the grim end of a disease process". The author challenges the prevailing model of depression as a medical illness, basing everything upon current brain research and current medical research dealing with depression. This is a very, very important book, one that every person who deals with depression should read.

If you are looking for a quick and dirty way of dealing with depression and want to take medication only, and from then on never think about depression or your life again beyond renewing your prescription, you would do better by NOT buying this book. Recovery from depression does take some work. On the other hand, if you want to know more about current research with SSRI's and view medication as only a part of your approach to dealing with depression, you should DEFINITELY buy this book. If you are like me and wish that you didn't have to take medication at all, and are willing to do some work to recover, you should absolutely buy it---you will love it and benefit greatly from it as I have.

If you want to know what research truly says about SSRI's it's here and more besides. Step-by-step techniques and tools. Examples that I could relate to. Integrating diet and exercise--what is shown to work and what doesn't. Supplementation. Support. Meditation. Movement. Awareness. Obstacles on your journey. Spirituality. There is a chapter on "the dark night of the soul", which includes dealing with suicidal thoughts. Alternative practitioners and alternative supplementation (including SamE, St. John's Wort, and rhodiola. There are huge appendices filled with resources to help you to find out more about every aspect of depression recovery. And of course, for clinicians and others, there are references to formal studies.

"Unstuck" is a resource manual---a bible, even---for depression recovery. It is important for those who have depression and for those who love them and for others who want to know what experts now know about all of the approaches to depression recovery.

Highly recommended.

UPDATE 7-14-08: I just wanted to add that I in no way disparage people who need or want a "medication only" approach for depression. Apparently my review has given this impression to at least one person, and I regret this. Perhaps this will be clearer: if you are adamant that you want pharmaceuticals, and ONLY pharmaceuticals, and you don't care about any integrative adjuvant approaches, AND you don't care what any studies say about the medication you are taking, your money would be wasted by purchasing this book. If you are happy and cured of your depression, in your own estimation, then you are indeed fortunate and certainly would not want this book. You would not be or feel stuck, and thus would not want to be "unstuck".

Three stars = a little more than half right

Most if not all of the things Dr. Gordon recommends are excellent strategies not only for people who are mildly or moderately depressed (conditions that I think probably shouldn't be referred to as depression at all to avoid confusion), but for everyone else, too.

However, for those who are seriously and severely disabled by depression, but who still have just enough energy to read, I think you can get a more complete and balanced view of the situation with some additional or alternative material.

A good start would be reading the following articles by fellow depressive Therese Borchard (on the web - find through a search engine).
"Don't Get Stuck on "Unstuck": Depression Is Real, and Drugs Help Me"
"The Latest on Antidepressants: Be Careful Where You Get Your Facts"

Then, especially if you've read "Unstuck," I think you'll have truly balanced and thorough basis to make a recovery plan for yourself if you read (or listen to as an audio book) "Against Depression" by Peter Kramer.

A final caveat about Dr. Gordon's book: Several elements of his recommendations contain an underlying - sometimes subtle, sometimes not so much - suggestion that depression is fundamentally a character flaw, or something that can be eliminated simply through alterations in a defective worldview, etc.
It's true that everyone needs to take as much responsibility as possible for their own lives. Needless to say it's also true that a symptom of depression is negative and unhealthy thinking. But for people who have major depression it's not helpful to frame the problem in ways that might lead to even more self-recrimination. In fact, I think that can make the problem and the consequences far worse.

If you have serious depression, especially in repeat episodes, there is considerable science pointing toward a probability that you have a biological injury, not just a "weakness."
So here's an analogy: If you have a bullet in your foot, it really doesn't matter whether you shot yourself or whether someone else shot you, or whether someone handed you the gun and encouraged you to do it, etc. The injury is the same, and you need to get serious help before you bleed to death. And if you have serious depression, get serious help before your life ticks away in confusion and despair.

So the Gordon book may be helpful, or not, depending on you, your history, and your current situation.

Gr 6-9-After providing the background of the persecution of Jews and other people considered undesirable by Hitler and his followers from 1933 on, Altman describes the method used to isolate them. She explains how the ghettos were governed; the unwitting complicity of Jewish administrators in carrying out Nazi orders; and the struggle of the inhabitants to maintain their spirit, humanity, schools, and culture. The story is told with compassion, but errors in the introduction mar what would otherwise be a highly recommended book. In addition, there is an inadequate explanation of the conditions under which a new law had been passed combining the offices of chancellor and president in Germany in 1934. The law was not merely fortuitous for Hitler; it was planned by him. None of these errors are found in the second volume. Byers correctly describes the dismal economic conditions in Germany after World War I, the resentment at the government that surrendered, the continued militarism and nationalism, and the ethnic unrest that continued to fester there. Life in the concentration camps, liberation, and subsequent war-crimes trials are vividly described. This is a thorough and accurate book.-Marcia W.
